Floyd Rose whammy bar problem?

i've had similar problems with floyds in the past (ESPECIALLY floyd rose special trems). i've since sold all my guitars with locking trems in favor of string-thru, stop tailpieces, or basic strat trems. since i'm not a lead player, i can do without them.

That's the thing I always liked about the Ibanez Edge. It just fits in the hole of trhe trem body and is snug. It has an adjustment too and a collar that helps. It's loose, yet doesn't wobble and drive one crazy when they use the trem. I have a Schaller Trem on my Jap Charvel that says Made in Germany by Schaller and it's loose. I'm going to look at the back of the base of the trem when I change strings and see if there's a way to tighten it down. Seems like it would have such a method to do so?
Thanks so much.

ok. Just took the trem spring cover off my 89 -91 Jap Charvel with a Schaller Trem from Germany. It has a Hex Screw on the base of the trem arm you can see on my guitar. I tightened it down just a little. NO WOBBLE! THank you god! I hate that! This is a great thing! Just for you folks that might wonder, it might work if you have a Schaller, but don't know about the OFR, but I'm told they are made in the same factory, so you might try it.. I have got mine down to almost no wobble at all, or not enough to notice. If there's any at all..
Thanks

I like that ThrowBackMan is posting in a two-year-old thread. Throwback, indeed.

Throwback #2

Is this the arm you are talking about?

I think my So-Cal has a different-yet-similar problem. Mine does not wiggle or have any play, but is too tight. When I screw in the bar it stays in place. When I try to use it, instead of the bar moving/swinging, the collar comes unscrewed. It constantly comes unscrewed, then it will feel wiggly because it is half unscrewed.

I thought about trying to sand the bar down on the part that goes down inside the trem, but not sure that would make a difference.

I hate this problem. I replaced the trem arm on my Dean ML 79 with a OFR bar and collet, which ismuch better than the screw in bar, but there's still a bit of wiggle room in there, and sometime it makes a little bit of vibration noise. Been trying to get that bar snug, but have run out of ideas?? gonna try a shaller maybe?? I'd probably use the bar a lot more if it was perfectly snug and working ho I want, cause i'm really starting to love floating tremolos on guitars.

Hey, that Dean ML79 Floyd is my current obsession! I want to get one of those when I get the money. They look like nice guitars.

They have the same Floyd 1000 series that the Charvels have.

If the bar wiggles too much, many people will put plumbers tape on the bar before they screw it on, and I have seen others put a pickup spring down in the hole before screwing the bar on.

Well, what a piece of crap!

I thought maybe I would WD40 the collar a bit to see if I could get it to rotate smoother and when I did half a little washer that was inside the collar fell out on the counter. The other half is still stuck in there.

Guess I will be buying a new bar after all.....

Replace both the bar and the socket on the baseplate.

This will fix ya right up! I did this with an Ibanez I used to have. Could not stand the play in the stock bar, as I'd always had OFR's or Schaller Floyd's.
