I like signature amps! I like it when artists give their own spin on things. The Friedman JJ JR (Jerry Cantrell) is a great rock amp with an awesome high gain mode so it's also suited for metal although it's probably not the most mean metal amp out there. It really has that signature Friedman tight crunch and the clean channel is great too. It's 20 watts and has 2 EL84s in the power section.

We all know the MT15. It's pretty legendary by now. Clean channel and a high gain channel. The clean channel is very sparkly and fender-y and the lead channel is just very modern and more metal oriented than the JJ JR. This one has 6L6 powertubes so it does have more headroom and girth at higher levels.

I wanted to compare these amps with a solid guitar, both clean and high gain, so I chose my Les Paul Custom. I think both amps sound great but I'd love to know your thoughts. Which one would you pick? Here's the comparison:

This was a pretty cool vid. I’ll state upfront that I have a JJ Jr, so my ear is absolutely biased towards it.

The MT15 has more beef in the low end and is definitely more modern sounding. It‘s a nice amp and definitely a winner in it’s price range for metal. The JJ has those mids that are full but articulate and has better clarity and balance. I liked the JJ’s overall tone much better. The MT15 sounded a little thin in the treble region. The one thing I would have liked to see added was a comparison of both amps boosted. I won‘t go into all of the different tones you can get between the be and hbe channel since this was strictly a metal shootout but I have a feeling that the JJ is more versatile than the MT15 as well.

Had an MT15 when they 1st came out. Didn't last long.

Same, a lot of gain but it seemed like it was all or nothing no real middle ground with it, crushing amp for a little guy though, I can't comment on the JJ I have not heard one in person
