I picked up some caps today, my amp tech said that he thought that going from 1000pf to 250pf would darken up the module, unless it was being utilized in a way he wasnt familiar with in the circuit. I wouldnt want the EG3/4 any darker. I'll have to experiment a bit to see.

It definitely doesn't darken up the module. This was done by word from Bruce / Jeff, who know the circuit inside out :). I trust when they say, smaller caps in this circuit will add a little bit treble / bite to the circuit. That's what it did for me and Nick, so you have 2 people that have done it with good results!

Eric

Awesome, thanks Eric I appreciate it. Obviously since I didnt have the module with me, my tech was only speculating. I grabbed a couple of different values so let the fun begin!

Both Nick and I really thought 250pf was great. I didn't even try the others I bought :). But, your ears might be different :).

Did it make it brighter than the SL2 at this point? Hmm maybe I should have ordered a 390 and 500PF too and socket mount it?

Oh, no, it didn't. It's still it's own module. It's still dark, but it has a bite to it that I love. Really helped me get the tone I was looking for for soloing and mid-gain stuff.

Thats good, I'm looking forward to trying it. What tubes are you using with it? I ordered some Chinese 12AX7 Shuguang along with the caps.

MarcoR, I ordered some different values. I may have an extra 500 for ya if you need it.

who is your amp tech ?

larger cap = low frequencies through = darker
smaller cap = low frequencies less = brighter

thats how it is on every amp i've seen :)

Yea...I would assume that a 250pf cap is much smaller than a 1000pf, they are even physically much smaller. You are saying smaller = darker, but thats not what Eric and Nick are saying.

i typo'd that pretty bad.. i just fixed the above. smaller = brighter.

Ah ok cool, thought I was goin crazy for a moment.

I just swapped around a few values in the EG3/4, I like 300pf so far the best. Gives it a nice extra bite.

you should add sockets then you can tweak til your hearts content.

i thought about ordering an eg5, take all the components out, socketing them all, and then tweaking my own eg5 :)

then i remembered I work, do 15 hrs of studio a week, have a girlfriend, and a 6 month old baby...

Anyone care to explain what "socketing" means or how sockets are used? I'm not interested in modding the eg3/4, but just curious.

Basically, instead of soldering the individual components on and off you solder in a small socket. That lets you swap components in and out without soldering, saving you both time and labor if you're going to do a lot of modding. I'd say it isn't worth it unless you're really going to experiment though.

depends how many times you really want to swap components. I built a tube screamer for a guy, and he wanted <everything> socketed so he could swap in and out til his hearts content.

some pcb's its possible to lift a solder pad, but i doubt that is the case with the egnater.. i'm still debating buying and socketing one though hehe...

marcor's right, http://www.smallbearelec.com/Detail.bok?no=101, are the ones you want.
