I have something out of the ordinary available today--7 NOS Bejing square getter 12AT7 tubes. These have approximately 60% the gain of 12AX7 tubes and are awesome in a variety of applications. All tubes are tested on my MaxiPreamp 2.
1) They're great in the phase inverter (PI) position, usually the last position in a tube amp. This lowers volume and noise by a few dB. Lets you open up loud amps a bit more and hit that sweet spot. Also improves dynamics in a very tactile way.
2) Very useful in one or more gain stages of extremely high gain or overly noisy circuits (5150s and modded Marshalls in particular). Popping one of these in V3 of a 5150/6505 will not only dramatically reduce the idle hiss of the lead channel, but also make the gain taper far more usable (anyone who's played one knows they quickly turn to mush past about 6 or 7 on the gain control). Putting another in V2 will tailor the amp for 80s gain levels and dynamics.
3) These are common reverb drivers in Fender and Mesa Mark type amps. Pop one in there and you may never need to change it again.
I have been using one in the PI of my 1993 Dual Rectifier for a few days now and am blown away by the increased dynamics and clearer gain quality compared to the Sovtek 12AX7LP that was in there (same tube as the LPS). Orange channel high gain (which I never cared for) came alive and is straight up Soldano tone now. It also got rid of the annoying noise floor on modern mode. There's no decrease to gain when used in the PI.
