With keeping your budget in mind, i'd hunt down a VHT 50CL & slam it with a good boost pedal like an OCD.

Although technically no "clean" channel to speak of. I use the green channel for dirt & red channel for very passable cleans

Yea, I almost got one. They are easier to find the a used Fireball.

Im starting to gain some interest in the Axe FX-Ultra.

What is this thing??? Would you need a power amp to run it???

Or is it plug and play?

It is a curse that binds us all
yes, you need a pwr amp

I've been waiting for a brutal tone from Axe FX, but most people who play metal with those are into progressive and metalcore, genres that really can't give me a feel for the product's capabilities in REAL metal.

This is about as close as you'll get:

It sounds good, but too honky and hollow for what I would be going for. I've gone through at least a hundred Axe FX clips and haven't heard anything that knocks me over, but I still want one so bad.

I think the best amp for you would be some sort of Engl. Compressed and fast, which is good for death metal. I had the Axe, and all of the models sounded fairly similar to each other. The difference between the Diezel, 5150, FAS, etc. were all very subtle, especially once you start tweaking. The options are almost endless, which drove me bat shit crazy. I may be majoring in comp sci, but I discovered that I don't want my music gear to involve too much tweaking. YMMV

Madison Prophecy 100w solid state. Picked mine up for $250 it glows red and sounds pretty fucking good for solid state. Would do DM just fine. Pretty mean voiced. I will try to put up some vids, I don't have a camera that can handle the volume. Need to borrow one. :(

I think I'm the same way, I need something straightforward without too many frills or I will spend too much time tweaking, and not enough time playing. I've been putting money into some recording equipment and school lately so I'm not going to have enough for an Engl Fireball 100 anytime soon, but I should be fine with the VH140C for awhile. The Axe FX might have some better updates by the time I'm ready to get another amp.

Not to derail the topic, but has anyone in this group played the Powerball II? I am interested in trying one out.

As far as DM amps:

Ampeg VH140C
Randall RG100ES with a boost....this thing is a beast
5150
Recto....My favorites are the Ractifier or the Single Recto. Boost that bitch and it is killer Death Metal tone

I found the 5150 too loose and noisy for extreme hard tones.

Krankenstein Plus should rip your face off. Love the 6550 tubes.

this plus a million. brutal s/s death metal tone as cheap as it gets. use whatever money you have left over for an isp sub...get the 12inch 300 watt version if you can't afford the bigger one.

do not get the 50 watt version. you want the first 100 watt version with the treble knob that pulls out, and no built in effects.

and if gsxrbusa sells his prophecy, i call dibs now. i could use a backup to the one i have. ;)

yea, so where can I fidn one? None on ebay, any forum or g.c.

i've actually decided that im going back to my 2101 setup with my old reliable mosvalve power amp.
felt the best, sounded fine and never failed.

I've been staring at those ISP Subs over the past couple months... someday...
