I remember seeing this tour and George's tone was absolutely crushing. Stumbled across this vid today and his playing is spotty in spots but hot diggity damn is that Marshall cooking. This guy's tone is so damn good. I love that he isn't doing the Axe FX thing and still wants these old Marshalls on stage with him. The subtle use of verb/delay also makes everything sound better. End of the day, the only thing that does a better Marshall, is a really good sounding Marshall.

I will also take this opportunity to say that George's new singer is terrible. Wish he had gotten one of his old singers for the job like Oni here or my fave, Mason.

Awesome show. Robert Mason is my favorite too. And I'm not digging the new singer either.

I was about to say that’s Oni in the video lol but I see that from 2017. I really dig the new album but yeah the singer is the weak link IMO. George’s tour is supposed to go well into next year I bet there’s a good chance that the current singer doesn’t last. Possibly Oni will be back or Robert to do a Lynch Mob sort of reunion .George and Jeff parted ways with Robert in The End Machine but with George’s track record of revolving musicians wouldn’t surprise me at all if he came back to sing for Lynch Mob

I agree with you on the new album, there is some really good stuff there and some fantastic grooves and lead playing but that singer....man, it's honestly God awful. He grates on my ears. Such a shame. Hopefully a mid tour switch up.

Sounds great and Ive always liked George's shythm playing as well! Not as much as EVH groove but still killer.

Dig George. Dig his ‘vibe.’ Dig the fact that not every performance is polished to perfection. And massive props for using boxes of glowing hot glass to get his tone.

Funny - when he his those first few chords before the band kicks in, I hear a pleasant - but pronounced - midrange that seems to draw criticism when associated with a certain brand of amp (rhymes with pawn). Once the full band kicks in, I don’t necessarily hear that midrange - but the guitar rides above the mix without relying on a ton of treble and presence. I think that’s the difference between a tone that makes you want to shred in your bedroom vs a tone that works in a live band mix.

Hmm, sounds like my 72 Marshalls to me. No Splawn 'honk'...as they used to say. Or 'weird mids' lol.....but i was never bothered by the QRs mids. Now, a non EQ Mark? Totally different story. yuck

I totally agree - I’ve owned 4 Splawns over the years. Down to 1. (Wish I had 2 of them back!) My ‘keeper’ is a 50 watt QR with the Old/New and Mid/Cut switches which IMO make the amp play nice with a much wider variety of speakers and cabs. But I never found any of my Splawns to have ‘weird’ or ‘honky’ mids. Sure, you could dial them in ugly on purpose if that’s what you were shooting for, but that’s true of dam near any amp. The older QRs could be finicky about speakers - some speakers do really emphasize certain midrange frequencies where others do not. But again, I think the options/switches on the newer ‘fully loaded’ QRs and Nitros solve this issue.

I appreciate the fact that George has been willing to just let things fly. He swings and misses sometimes, but he's always reaching for something more, where a lot of his contemporaries in their most recent forms were just sort of doing the same shit they had been doing for 30 years if they were even able to still put asses in seats.

Was just listening to those chords at the beginning . Reminds me of some of those rippin’ modded Marshall clips that get posted here

Checked the Whisky video out this morning and was glad to hear George sounding like the old George I grew up with. The tone was there that night.

Here's his rig from the whiskey. Check out the heel on his axe.

You have to respect George for touring with these amps instead of keeping them in a case like a collector. He isn't even playing stadiums or large venues...he's bringing these things out to dive bars. I'm surprised he doesn't play his old randall mts rig tbh. That Friedman spec brahma IS the module. Sounds so good through greenbacks. Still the best module he ever did. Better than his synergy plexi and BE stuff imo. It's this one here from an old clip:

He sounded good then, it’s almost like he plays with dementia now
that first clip posted and the 1986 one i posted showcase the live TONES he got in his prime. i swear if you could imagine these tones perfectly dialed in, mic’ed and cranked in a roaring concert PA system that was the ULAK tour show i saw. and when his tone was on, the guy played with a different level of confidence and bravado. but you could tell he hated dokken’s guts by then as he kept swinging his hockey stick kamakazee ESP headstock at don’s head every time he came near. but he was so on!

by contrast i saw the breaking the chains tour at magic mountain, the back for the attack tour with aerosmith at the forum, and monsters of rock show at the LA coliseum and those weren’t in the same universe as the ULAK show.
