Get Funky

my sister had this on heavy rotation throughout my childhood

and when i was in the 3rd grade she took me to my first concert—-Earth Wind and Fire.

game over.🕺🏽

the first Randy Rhoads memorial concert at the Hollywood Palace was a total lip gloss hair farmer camel toe sausage festival.
i couldn’t pretend to remember the first several bands that played but think really crappy Warrant/Crue wannabees in front of a sea of completely unimpressed LA arm folders. my highlight was shoulder checking the fringy blue suede suited/black sombrero’ed don dokken as he tried to star swagger by me at the bar🤣

about to write off the gig as a wash when up steps this guy and tears the friggin roof off. the whole joint is going off and the evening is saved.

lesson learned.

Yeah that guitar is greasy AF, this is a killer video with the man himself:

Paalakai.....hoooooo some mean memories from that place hahah. Guys here are scratching their heads, WTF are these guys talking about.

Thanks a lot for posting this incredible performance ! OMG, what a deep groove !! I hadn't realized Ray Parker Jr was such a genius guitarist... I thought he was just the Ghostbuster one hit wonder... I didn't even know he played guitar... After listening to the video, I looked around and discovered he played and composed with Stevie Wonder (Talking Book), Herbie Hancock (Doin' It), Marvin Gaye (I Want You) etc. All records I know like the back of my hand... Somehow I entirely missed him when looking at the credits... Discovery of the year for me ! Many thanks ! Gonna look into it much further !

Funk guitar tones are probably as popular as chocolate onions around here.

But i just picked up an AC30 CCH and sure it does the old Stones/Petty Britt snarl as advertised.
The clean tones aren't often discussed and they are pretty amazing. Long live the funk!

Did somebody say chocolate onions?

I love funk! I was gonna post a few more Rufus w/ Chaka Khan clips featuring Tony Maiden on guitar, then I got to thinking.

It's no secret what a huge Robin Trower fan I am/ was. I lost count how many times I saw the band live.
In 1976-78 Trower added funk bassist Rustee Allen on bass. Rustee had previously played with Bill Lordan (Trower's drummer) in Sly and the Family Stone.
I had seen Trower sell-out MSG, NY in 3/76. A few months later, at Shea Stadium.

In late '76 we saw the first show with new bassist Rustee. He proceeded to turn every Trower tune into a funk-fest. He absolutely transformed all those tunes. You can hear him on the Long Misty Days and In City Dreams albums, as well as a LIVE King Bisquit album.

Check out his bass playing in this, as well as his solo.

this fella played bass on our worship team for a decade

he also co-wrote this one as a founding member of karizma and told me amazing stories about hangin out with the porcaro family, landau, vinnie, etc

was an honor sharing the stage with this funk master. check the breakdown at 2:15🕺🏽
