Get ready to be mad... the Fortin Killer Kali module is awesome!

I'm confused....Fortin Killer Kali? I thought it was a Gower mod??

Good point! I have a Gower Killer Kali and have a Fortin Cali-modded JCM800 SuperBass and they're nowhere near alike.. The Fortin-Cali modded was a Jose-type mod (long before he came out with his Cali amp) and the Killer Kali+ I have from Dan is not a Jose-Mod hmmm

damn I had no idea both existed!

Yeah I dunno. I feel like I saw an announcement vid where Mike said he and Dan worked together on the Kk mod, but it’s entirely possible I heard that wrong.

I am old and easily confused.

They did work together on it a long time back. . I'm older than you and remember it. lol.. Then I was probably 1 of the first few in the US to send an amp to Gower for the KK mod. I had 50 watt RI Marshall 1987 that had been screwed around with and decided to mail it Great Britain to be KK-Modded. . Dan was awesome and it came back just a killer amp.. . Meanwhile many years earlier, Fortin used to do "Jose" type mods called "Cali-mods" and I bought a 100 watt Marshall JCm800 super-bass from a guy on the original Rig-Talk with the Cali (Jose) mods. Still have that amp too , and they're nothing alike. Both great amps and I'm blessed to have many others too. . . 2 benefits to being old 1) Have seen loads of my idols in concerts and 2) Have been able to accumulate the best gear .. .. .There are no other benefits lol

Fook me! I’d love to spend some time with those amps!

Also, I just bought a Crab Amps Cali off Reverb. I might have to revisit Synergy again even though I'll most likely sell them cause I love my VTM rig. Lol!

Oh man, way before Brad King. I can't quite remember details but I remember Bob Savage was 1 of the 1st people here, and I know Sgt Thump (Chris Snider) had it also before Brad.

Damn I had no idea some of you guys have been around that long!

I don't post here much, but yea there's a few of us.. I was never in any cliques here, but it's always been a a good gear forum.. . Unfortunately some died over the years, and some last, and some move to other forums or quit playing. . I've been a gearhead since I was a teenager, and love the forums so will be around a little longer hopefully..

What other forums did people migrate to?

I totally agree with the leaving part btw, there used to be so many more people who were around for pre-80s rock scene. Only vaguely remember usernames and the hilarious commentary but it makes me quite sad to see that generation moving on away from playing and forums. Truly losing touch with that time.

I'm liking this one..so is Fortin just another jose mods sort of guy? Because it sounds like this one will be a much cheaper way to go for that sound than a wait list Jose Friedman.

Love that you left the last part in there lol, that guy was a prick but hey, he might have been tired of all the noodling through out the day. There is still a nicer way to ask though.

Fortin and Gower collaborated on the mods. Both did them. When Fortin stopped taking mods Dan was doing them all from that point forward. I owned a Fortin Cali modded Marshall and a gower killer kali. Dan told me the killer kali had the Cali circuit in it (I believe it was the 3 stage with the sat engaged). However, I felt those 2 amps sounded nothing alike at all. Hope that brings some context.

Sounds good!

Original Cali = 3 tube gain stages + CF, diode clipping
Killer Kali = 4 tube gain stages + CF, no diodes

Newer Fortin Cali (the production one with white headshell) = combination of 3 gain stages + diodes and additional tube gain stage via plate-driven stack.

Both Fortin and Gower did them.
