Ok metal heads, who owns an Explorer? Does anyone own one along with a Les Paul? I never spent much time with an Explorer but I've heard some guys get killer tones from them for rock and metal. I played a few and it's clear that Gibsons quality control smokes dope often   I played a Explorer a few months back and it was full of fuck ups all over it, other ones i played were pretty clean.

I was thinking of getting another ballsy sounding dual bucker loaded guitar and Explorers are a lot cheaper than LP's. Yes, i do like PRS SC's but they're pretty pricey while Explorers go for under 1k often. The white Explorers with the Ebony boards are the sex.

I had an Explorer for a little while alongside my LPs. Mine had a rosewood board and it was "warmer" sounding than my LPs.

It was a really nice sounding guitar in it's 100% stock form. Although I didn't have a problem with the guitar, don't expect custom shop quality. It's one of their "lower end" models.

Dude, you remind me of my old singer. He had more facial gruff than this pic, and never mind his man boobs   He's the one on the left.

get a hamer standard

I'd love to play one first but i doubt I'll ever see one locally. I am hoping to score something that plays and sounds great at a decent price. The last Gibson Explorer i played REALLY raised a red flag, the thing was full of fuck ups all over it.

I have both a Gibson Gothic Explorer and a Gibson Gothic LP...my biggest criticism might be the fretwork..ends aren't dressed that great...but I love the sound of both of them..stock pickups and all.

Couldn't get the action on either of 'em down that low either...but I just put big strings on 'em and use 'em for serious chunk/downtuned :D

The playability on either of 'em isn't anything to write home about for $800-$1000 guitars but I love the tones...the Explorer is heavier and meaner by far.

Gonna head down to GC on Memorial Day and check out the Gibby Faded Explorers...supposedly 'cheap'

Explorer's are the heaviest sounding guitars I've ever played. I absolutely LOVE them. I've owned about 4 or 5 and each one sounded HUGE. 500T FTW.

You have good taste. I was thinking of one, but have since been leaning towards a V. The last Explorer I played wasn't any better playing than the Epiphone version. I was quite dissapointed.

Explorer fucking rocks. Especially in drop-B and drop-C. And the playability is better than my LP and the sound is heavyer. Then again my Explorer is 1987 and the LP is 2005...But in my "stoner" band the LP fits in better with it's low and big sound.
For metal I would take the Explorer.

I have both a Gibby LP and an Explorer. The Explorer is bigger and thicker sounding and IMO an all around better guitar. If I was given the choice to have only one, the Explorer would win no contest.

I have both too.....a Les Paul Standard, and a heavily mod'ed Hamer Blitz (which was their step below the 'Standard' in the 80s, but feels 2 steps above their current overseas line)
The Blitz has EMG 81 & 85s in it, as well as a Kahler Spider tremolo (not to mention the top was completely re-done), so it's not really fair to compare the two. That said, the Les Paul can do more (& Better) sounds than the Hamer, but the Hamer did cost about half of the price and can do biiiig metal tones just as well as the LP!
