Gotoh.

Pros
*Better bang for the $s, ~3x less than the FR. < $100 brand new for the chrome or black.
*More color options than the FR, with minimal cost difference relative to the chrome option.
*Bigger fine tuners with more grip.
*More ergonomically designed, IMO.
*Comes with the trem claw/screws, springs, trem posts & bushings, hex tools.
*Options for trem block size: 33/36/40 mm. Size needs to be specified to the vendor.
*Trem springs can be "locked" into the trem block.
*Saddle shims are cheap relative to the FR, < $5 for a set of 4.

Con
Trem bar has to be detached when placing in a guitar case but bar attachment/detachment is contingent on the case size.

not trying to argue, honestly don't understand. wouldn't the arm need to be detached for either option? :dunno:

I always take mine off floyds, gotohs, or kahlers before putting away.
Bigsby is the only one where I just rotate. Couldn't imagine having to take that off :ROFLMAO:

Really depends if there's clearance inside the case.

Cases like for Music Man Axis & some G&G have sufficient clearance to accommodate having the trem bar attached. But most cases don't.

I probablly was thinking that it's a bit more inconvenient to detach the Gotoh trem bar since one has to go the trem cavity to get at the button head hex screw attaching the bar. Whereas on an FR bar attachement/detachment is much easier since the bar socket housing is right on top of the bridge where the bar attachment/detachment screw goes.

I basically didn't word my initial description correctly. LOL

This is about where we're at right now (hardware color/finish poll to come later)...

Pretty much all of this and they look more clean too ^_^

I wonder if it has anything to do with the area where the fine tuners sit being angled back similar to the Floyd Pro. Seems like this orientation would facilitate the palm of the hand having a little more room to sit on the bridge. I've never seen a Gotoh 1996 in person so just thinking out loud based on what I see in the picture above.
This is it for me. The Gotoh is easier for my picking hand.

As far as using the trem, IME the OG has a more pronounced 'wah-wah' effect when you just barely pop it, like trying to get two notes out of one like EVH did all the time. But the Gotoh feels a little smoother.

TBH I've only ever owned top-mount Floyds but I voted recessed because my favorite Strats have the strings closer to the body. The top mount Floyds have the strings way high off the body and the bridge pickup is almost outside the body its set so high. Just looks awkward/sub-optimal from a guitar design standpoint.

Retrofitting a Floyd on a guitar? Yeah top mount I get it. But building from the ground up? Recessed just seems like a better design.

I feel like there's some pros and cons to both top mounted or recessed. Usually the neck angle is tilted a bit more back on a top mounted FR. For me this translates into a more relaxed fretting hand in the cowboy chord area and a bit more cramped the further up I go. (I) Don't have this issue with recessed FR as the neck is more parallel with the body, but does require a slightly more stretched position for a relaxed arm. In turn the more outward angle in relation to me makes a smoother transition up and down the fingerboard. I notice these things more when I'm sitting down vs standing, though. Perhaps there's an argument to be had somewhere in there regarding lead playing. 🤷‍♀️

Interesting. I actually love the angle of a tom for this reason. It feels like i am in a weird position sometimes with a parallel neck rather than the tilted neck you get with the tom. So with the tom, I can play all the way up and down the neck and not feel cramped or like my forearm is too long making a weird elbow angle.

Maybe this is why you see a lot of bigger guys on Toms
