So I found a nice quad of original G12-80's off of eBay for cheap, loaded them up in the cab and it flat out rips. Sounds huge...a bit bigger than the 80's in the Marshall 4x12. The Marshall cab has a little more mids though. So far I am really happy with it.
Dave, you mentioned those are NOT the Lead 80's? I recall sitting with Mark a few times while he was fine-tuning my amps and he said he lked the Lead 80's and the G12-65s... He had an old/ratty Marshall slant cab with the 65s in it and it sounded pretty good.

I'm looking for a quad to stick in my '72 Marshall slant cab, I like the Scumback M75-65W spkrs, but wanted to maybe try something different. Any suggestions? My "sound" is either my Mark C. modded Low Gain "Jose" 50 watter or my Dave Friedman modded "Kitchen Sink" 100 watt JMP. ll my spkrz are now the Scumbacks and I love 'em. It's a struggle to decide which amp head/cab I like better. My APC-modded JMP isn't my cup of tea, though... it's too "Modern" for me, I like the older, more vintage Marshall tones.

What do you attribute to the Cameron cab in sounding "better/bigger" than the Marshall cab? Is it a slant or straight cab?

The thing I really love about it is the back panel does not use wood screws.

masking tape?

Haha. Actually T nuts are used and are pressed into the lip on the back where the back panel lays on. The back panel has a wider holes drilled so that the bolts goes through the back panel into the T nuts. This way you can tighten the back panel without worry of stripping out the wood. I am surprised more people have not done this. Top quality indeed
Dave,

That's a cool and yet simple way to mount the back panel and I'm also surprised it isn't done more.... Do you know who makes/covers the cabs for Mark? Just curious, since there are more and more vendors cranking out head and spkr cabs nowadays...

Back to the speakers for a moment; you mentioned the M65s... were you referring to the Celestions? I had a quad of old/orig and well-broken in 65s and they sounded great with the LG "Jose"-Marshall, and I used 'em for years... literally hundreds of gigs, jams and rehearsals. I guess I just got GAS and wanted to try the Scumback M75-65s and I'm glad I did! They sound awesome, but I wouldn't mind my other Marshall (slant) cab having a different flavor... But I sold off the 65s....

I read where Mark recommended the H30s in his cabs with the CCV amp. I think you have those in cabs and if so, how does that sound compared to the C-80s? And are the Heritage H30s worth the extra dough vs. the std H30s?

I really like the T nuts since I have changed speakers 3 times already (65's, 25's and the 80's).

I am referring to the original 65's. You should have kept them...

Yes, Mark likes the H30's best for his amps. I love them as well. I only used the 80's since I was looking for a more modern big bottom sound. I really like the heritage H30's over the anniversary 30's. The heritage speakers have a nicer overall sound with less highend. Of course the Scumbacks are really nice too ;)

Argghhh! You are not helping!!  I know I shoulda kept the G12-65s.... especially since I see their prices inflated.... Did you have something to do with that, too? :D

Wahhhh... my speaker quest shall continue..... I just want a different-sounding spkr cab with the slant; maybe more modern or edgy to contrast the more vintage-sounding M75 Scumbacks in the straight cab...

Do the Heritage H30s stay tight and focused in the lower end? I can't stand a mushy/flubby bottom on speaker cabs (or on broads either! LOL!)... I don't know/ain't heard shit on the G12-80s so I have no idea what they'd sound like with my two amps...

I guess I'll probably need one to for when Mark ships my cab... Supposed to be this week along with my CCV!

Dave, have you ever tried Scumbacks?

People seem to rave about them and I'm curious as to what you think since you seem to have tried everything.

Have only tried Scumbacks in a 2x12. I really don't need any more 25's or 30's. I would be happy if Jim sent me a quad for free
I'm sure he'll jump right on that.

He will. He let TM borrow 9 grand worth of cabs and speakers for over a year.

Hey Jerry. I still need a logo and rear faceplate  I am willing to throw out a few bucks for them.

I hope mine comes with a rear faceplate and logo. :(

Had another Mills 412 delivered last week. This one I had dressed with 4-H30 70th. I know Mark recommends 30's, but these did nothing for me. Not sure if it is the larger size of the Afterburner compared to the size of a regular cab or the speakers, but they did nothing for me. Lots of bottom, but lost some of the sizzle I am always after. Tried before with 2-H55/2-H75 LHDC Scums but I think the lower frequency response of the 55's were causing something in the lower mids/lows that I didn't care for. So, I am in the process of trying out 2-M75/2-H75 LHDC Scums which I think may be right combination. The CCV also sounds good with 2-V30/2-K100 Celestions. I am using that cab though with my Twin Jet.

Stay tuned.

Steve

Hey Steve, have you tried the H30/CL80 mix with the CCV?
That was the best combo I used with the CCV with a StoneAge 4X12B.
I also had a Mills Afterburner with V30's/75's then V30's/100's
when I had the CCV I still thought the SA with the H30X80's
won by a good margin.
The true'r to Marshall cab seem to give the CCV a more woody character with more versatility.
I think the H30/80 mix didn't really add too much to the tone except some bottom and high's
and let the choice CCV mids roar on through

No, didn't try that. I wonder how close the 100's are to the 80's? I am finding that an oversized cab, even though it is big and bad ass, isn't always the best. I like the hell out of the straight front Bogner cabs with the slant baffle and my Naked Scumback cab. It is ugly as hell being bare wood, but there is something about the tone that I cannot replicate with any other cab, regardless of speakers.

Steve

@Josh or Dave - what's the dimensions on a Cameron cab - same as a regular 68 Marshall (29x29x14)?

The Scums aren't working with the Cameron in a Mills cab.

H30's aren't working in a Mills cab.

V30/K100 sound good with the Cameron in a Mills cab.

Scum mix works good in a Scum Naked cab.

Original Greenback's in a 76 Marshall cab aren't working for me with the Cameron.

Gonna make one more swap and check the H30's in the Marshall cab.

Then I am done.....maybe not. I may stuff one of my Mills to reduce the internal volume a bit or add some additional baffling and see what this does. I hate to spend anymore money on Chinese made Celestions. I may end up grabbing a couple more K100's though for another 30/100 mix or 80's as some of the guys seem to like. I like a little of the V30 in the mix and think that a V30/H30 mix would be great. Can't run a mix of Scum and V30 as Jim has the Scums programmed to self-destruct if they come near a V30.... :D

The cabinet appears to be the same size as a typicall Marshall 4x12....except the front baffle is straight.

Thanks. Went back with the H30 Anniversaries in the Mills and threw a little stuffing in. Not bad. Gonna move them over to my old Marshall cab and see how that goes.

Steve

the cab is the same dimnensions as a marshall B cab... but is built beefier.... :D
