My Splawn cab (straight) is loaded with the 25W greenies.
I love the tone, but I am kinda annoyed at the bassiness/boomyness of it.
I was told by a few people that the 25W Greenbacks are known for this, and that if i had the 30W ones (G12H i think), i would notice an improvement.
I mean, i can put my bass on 0 on all my amps and there is still 'boominess'
I am no speaker pro (I've only played through 3-4 types), so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I use my Competition and Plexi with this cab, so i want to keep it 'vintagy' sounding.

you could try the new splawn small block 25 speakers. they're based off heritage greenbacks but are rated at 55 watts (even though they say 25 on them). i find them to not be as dark and boomy as celestion greenbacks. very cool speakers.

Have you considered trying the Weber Stan Spec greenback speaker? Lots of guys say its a massive improvement over the Celestion GB reissue thats in a lot of cabs!

I know I'm going to get flamed for saying this, but EVERY rear loaded cab I've tried in the last 5 years seemed boomy to my ears. No matter what the speaker. I love my chinese GBs in my D412 front loaded cab.

Granted - I do have significant hearing loss in one of my ears so you may want to take my opinion with a grain of salt.

Dumb question, but does he call them that on his site, or do I have to use the custom form thing?

My 1960a Marshall sounds great. Never had this problem with it :aww:
It's just the Splawn cab.

I'm gonna find out the price from Derek.
I might try these.

I'm using the Celestion Heritage Greenbacks into a Mojo 4x12 and I deal with the same thing. I'm starting to think that it is more of a cabinet issue. It was worse with the Celestion Heritage H30's.

I have GBs in a mojo and I do not find them boomy with my JVM, have the bass at around noon but very little res. I did go the extra mile and sealed that cab with silicon so maybe that helps??

What about that stuff Bogner puts on the back panel? Would that help as well as sealing it?

The last rear loaded cab I tried (that I can think of) was a 1981 1960a with 65s. (I outbid Amplifire on ebay.) The cab sounded boomy and farty no matter what speakers I tried. The 65s sounded awesome in my VHT cab though. Oddly enough I had a similar early 80s 1960 for 15 years and I loved it.

That is more of a sound absorbion type thing and takes some freqs out of the mix, I do not have much experience with that though. You would have to ask a Bogner cab owner. I sealed the cab with silicon as I felt the cab sounded a bit loose at volume.

Greenies can sound boomy with certain amps or cabs. Have you tried hooking teh amp up to 2 greenie cabs?

for my ears the Chinese Celestion Greenbacks do have quite a bit of bass given thier specs.

out of the speakers i've been around. for expensive i'd say try Heritage 12-65's.

and for cheapo a maybe would be the Warehouse Green Berets? i liked them straight out of the box, then after some break in i started to think they're a little mushy on the bottom end? so maybe mushy to me, might be just right for someone else? i like the Green Berets enough i'm gonna keep them, but i 99.99% sure i prefer the tighter Chinese Celestion Greenie.

it might be worth a try to pull the back off your cab and throw some dampening stuff in there and see what happens? i did it to my Gov/MOW Splawn cabs. i think it helps cut down on some of the harsh highend, and guess it does keep some of the sound from coming out the wood. which i guess could be percieved as boom?

I love the GB's in my Bogner 4X12. I run my XTC in loose mode with the bass up to 2:00. With the mids up a bit, and presence up, mine are nice and crisp. Love 'em. Couldn't stand the V30's that originally came in the cab, so I ripped 'em out and put the GB's in.
