While I did start this thread to bitch about this particular experience with GC, I do think it comes down to the store and even individual employee on how things are handled.
I wouldn't trust my local Guitar Center to pack a roll of bubble wrap for it to arrive safely. And that's assuming it's not busted up in the first place. I've also received obviously wrong items. An expensive cab that should have had V30's, but had shitty Bugera speakers in it. I returned that cab then saw it posted back for sale later that afternoon. Same expensive price and same incorrect shit speakers.
When I returned the module, they had one employee sitting at a desk up front with his feet up. They had a couple of people waiting behind me while I got my refund. The guy helping me asked the dude sitting down if he could wait on the other people since it would take him a bit longer to do my refund. Guy sitting flat out said "no. I don't feel like it, they can wait"
On the other hand (and I don't remember the store), I've had a GC employee call me 10 minutes after I made an online order for my Ibanez bass. They just took the bass out the box to hang on display and had already tossed the box. He called to tell me this and ask if was okay to ship in a different box or if I wanted to be refunded because though technically new, had been opened. He assured me it hadn't been hung out front yet and he would personally pack it securely. The bass was packed really well; double boxed, arrived safely and looked brand new, not even a fingerprint on it.
I never have really liked GC, but it used to not be so bad. They used to at least employ musicians who actually cared and knew about the gear. Now-a-days you're lucky if 1% of their staff are musicians, know anything about what they're selling or actually give a crap about anything their doing.
