Guitar Player Magazine Halts Publication, Puts Out One Last Print Edition After 58-Year Run

Used to be my favorite magazine until I found out they didn't pay the artists for their interviews. It was "for exposure". The story was that they asked Albert King for an interview and he said "that'll be 500 dollars". They told him there was no pay. He said "you sell your magazine for money, right? I want 500 copies". LOL, true bluesman right there. I'm pretty sure that was GP magazine and not GFTPM. Good riddance. I hate bloodsuckers like that.

Story is about halfway down. Glad they are out of business. That's exactly where they belong. Dude in the article can suck a bug, a big, gross bug. Listen to this jerk:

"One contender for the worst was George Thorogood, whose ego and attitude in the early 1980s seemed to me to extend beyond his abilities. Then again, he may have just been having a bad day. And then there was Albert King, a great blues artist. When I called him about doing an interview, Albert said, “I want $500.” I politely told him that we did not pay the artists we interviewed. Albert responded, “You sell your magazines for dollars, don’t you? Well, I want 500 of ’em.” Choosing the best is trickier. "

Not sure how ti's an ego thing to want to get paid for doing work meanwhile they sold that rag for a premium. What a jerk. I know George is known for that but he was a star, what'd you expect? So slag on his chops. Dude might benefit from a punch to the mouth, sounds like he missed his turn.

Any of the various guitar magazines, Stereo Review, and Crutchfield/Radio Shack catalogs….you wouldn’t catch me in a classroom without one or more of them in the 80’s.

Obrecht character assassinating musicians. More like Albert King called out Obrecht's bs.

Man those magazine articles made or break players . They all sound do it free all day long. They understood they needed the mags .

I remember when Lisa used to work with them, I'm not sure why they split to begin with but she was touting her collection and how she always got into events and she was not very humble at the time. She was loved by the staff as she was flirtatious with the boys on the team. It would had been cool if they called her back for that one last print lol

I almost want to buy it but tbh, I'll probably forget.

It's a slap in the face to be asked to do work for free. The players make the magazine, not the other way around. And teh staff get paid, no? But if you're feeling generous I will PM you for some free lessons when I get back from FL.

Here is a list of all the reputable magazines that pay for interviews:

Between this and your statements about Greg Koch... :dunno:
