With dialing the amp gain down, and using a pedal to get the gain back, is there a feel difference. Does it make the amp more fluid feeling?
Honestly this really depends on the amp, the boost, and how they interact. Personally, I've always had my best results getting all I can gain wise from my amp and then using whatever little bit is needed from the boost to get me where I want. IMO that preserves more of the amp's tone and feel.

Now you mentioned using an eq pedal when you got the hiss. Eq pedals can be prone to adding noise when used as a boost in front of an amp. More so than your average dirt pedal, unless of course you're really goosing it. There's a guy who does a "sniper" mod on the Boss GE-7 graphic eq pedal that supposedly does wonders for killing noise when running it in front of an amp.

If you're boosting you can get away with the gain on the amp around 7 or 8. And that's for metal stuff.

I think those boss EQ pedals are kinda noisey themselves though, i'd suggest something different.

Also, when boosting with an EQ, the frown (upside down smiley face) shape is the way it should be set. Lots of mids before the amp, and less bass, highs. Good luck.

I prefer the opposite, I like cutting the mids out a little bit and boosting the bass and highs. I find that if you boost the mids you get the Kerry King/Slayer tone :bleh: and no one wants that.

With the EQ up front?? Sounds terrible boosting the bass and treble and cutting mids when it's up front IMO. Loose and flabby.

The mid scoop setting sounds cool in the loop though.

Didn't realize we were talking about it out front, don't really have a lot of experience with that. I always was like, "EQs must go in the loop" and there they have been. I have to try boosting out front.

Sorry about that.

i gotta try my ns2 in the loop. ive always used it after my boost pedal and it kills most all the noise. never tried the loop thing though

Jeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeez just get a volume pedal and call it a day. Why the f would you buy 3 other pedals to boost your leads? Just raise the volume and switch to your neck p/u. Ernie Ball volume pedal. $99 fix and flip of a switch and bob's your uncle. I am totally watching Cobra tonight. It's been sitting in my dvd cellar for a minute and I need it. "I'll blow this place up man!"....."It's ok, I don't shop here"

Guys that boost should be treated the same as girl's that boost. If you steal you should be treated the same.

I use my EQ in the loop for volume boost. BUT I wanted a more liquidy feel on my leads as well, so I want to try boosting for that.

If they have never done it correctly, they would'nt understand. :(

Find a good boost for what you're trying to do. A Boss EQ is not a good boost only because it's noisey. Try a Duncan Pickup Booster or an Electro Harmonics LPB 2 (not LPB Tube). most of the Germanium (sp?) Treble Boosters will do a great job, as well. I just have not tried many of them extensively, so I can't recommend one.

And, obviously, put it in front of the amp. Not in the loop.

I bought a kit on ebay that reduced the noise in my Boss GE-7 to an acceptable level. Think it was $20 and a easy do it your self mod.

So how was it? Did you get the liquid lead tone you want?

As many of the guys pointed out, you turn down amp gain if you boost. A rule of thumb that i follow is to set the amp gain on 5, and have the pedal level on 10 and pedal gain on 0. From there if i want more saturation i slowly increase the pedal gain up to a max of 5. I never go higher than 5 on the pedal gain.

I picked up a cheap DS-1 Today. I'll try it out tommorow and see how it works.

Don't let that pedal make up your mind about boosting, there are a lot of great pedals out there

The ds-1 sounded pretty damn good with the RG80ES. I got a very nice lead tone. I didn't seem nearly as noticable through the Legacy, but the Legacy already has a nice singing lead tone anyways. Now just to work out the ground hum when using an adapter
