Man, this thing sounds pissed off. I remember when I bought it, I was told by a number of people it couldn’t do metal without a boost. BS… sounds pretty metal to me.

If it doesn’t play for you here click the arrow in the corner.

First riff slayerish, second crystal mountain note ringing (couldn’t remember it exactly but whatever), third galloping where my brain short circuited on a note because I literally just did all this right out of the gate then double tracked.

Here’s the same riffs recorded with the hell razor

And combined for a comparison

First is MC second is hell razor.

It sounds good, but to be honest your hell razor clips sound much better to me. Meaner, grittier, beefier, more distinctive. I don’t see what the MC or MTL bring to the table that the HR doesn’t other than maybe more open rock type sounds that aren’t as high gain, but I haven’t admittedly had the amps side by side like you. I’ve owned them all separately

The hell razor is nothing like the MC imo. MC is much more open/classic whereas the HR is wayyy more modern sounding. I don't find the HR sounds good at low/mid gain tones at all. I don't know why Rick put a clean channel on that amp lol.. it's god awful. It's a pure chug machine. Mids and highs are voiced completely different and has way more low end than the MC. I've got both of the amps plugged into an ampete switcher and they really can't be dialled in similar at all. Both great amps... just different voices, different beasts.

Something I don’t hear talked about too often is how good the MC and MC2 are at mid to low gain crunch tones. On the Lead channel, leave the Lead Boost off and set the gain to maybe 1:00-2:00 and you get some of the clearest and most authoritative modernized AC/DC crunch I’ve ever heard. From there, if you turn up the Bass knob to 2:00-3:00, you can crack the foundations of your house while the highs and mids stay tight and clear.

I agree that I would never use it for low/mid gain sounds, no argument there and said that in my post before. I (and others I know with one) though actually think it’s cleans are quite good for a high gain amp and am pretty picky about my cleans. Surprised you don’t like them on the HR. Mine is a 2024 KT150 version fwiw

For high gain it basically to me seems like the MC I had on steroids from what I remember of it, sort of like what I think most guys try to get the MC to do boosted for metal. It is a chug machine for sure, but find I can get many different sounds on it with how interactive those 3 gain knobs are from very bright clanky stuff to thick and sludgy and anything in between those extremes. I have settled on some pretty weird settings on it lol, but that doesn’t matter. At least for metal or more aggressive styles I can’t see where I’d choose the MC or MTL I had over it, but would agree about it for low to mid gains (not clean)

Yeah the hell razor is a lot more angry for sure. I remember doing this a while back to test the mid settings. So pissed off.

Agreed. I think I hear that also in Pretty Wreckless’s sound. You hear that distinctive dry, crisp, scorching sound almost like the sonic equivalent of a gin and tonic lol. That is one thing I feel MC’s have that the HR really isn’t effective at unfortunately

I think the MC is a bit more open, but the hell razor is more similar EQ curve wise to the MC than the MTL. The MTL can be a little bloated on its own. But boosted gets angry and sounds a little bigger than the hell razor to me. It definitely doesn’t sound as pissed off or as forward as the hell razor though.

Yeah I remember that one! That sounds awesome! Like you said a lot more angry and ballsy. I like the openness, extra brightness and uppermids of your MC clip and can see it being great for more rock type stuff, but to me at least for what you play it would be the HR every time

Crisp and scorching is a great way to describe those amps, yep. Nailed it.

And I agree they’re dry on their own, but I was surprised to learn they can also fill out really well and get compressed if you put the right boost in front of them too. It’s kind of wild how versatile they are.

To me that crisp, scorching quality is one of the main things that makes their flavor unique to other amps along with the note definition on palm mutes. The MC in particular takes boosts very well. The HR actually can imo get very saturated on its own (more than many would need) as well as more compressed if desired. I don’t use boosts with it

Fuck yeah. Sounds metal to me bro'.

Sounds like it'd cut through a mix nicely; you don't want all that bottom end anyway.

can't play an amp you are going to sell. You'll wind up with piles of amps that look like they are teetering on destruction. My dog won't even go in my amp room anymore. :aww:
