Have all the best guitar tones been created?

I think the everything encompassing the ’younger generation’ when it comes to guitar/music is heavily shortsighted or underestimated. Just look at the market, ESP, Ibanez and Schecter aren’t putting out 40 new models a year w/ Evertunes, Fishman’s and ergonomic bodies for the 45+ crowd. Look at the guitarists those companies are signing as endorsees, probably won’t recognize a single name but the kids certainly know who they all are.

Guitar is alive and well, no threat of death any time soon. The last decade has been closer to the 80’s with technical guitar playing being celebrated again. Tosin, Plini, Aaron Marshall, Angel Vivaldi, Polyphia, those guys are the new Vai/Satch/Yngwie. Vai in particular has been great at propping the younger players up and giving his stamp of approval, if you can make Vai say “What the hell are they doing?”, that says something, IMO.

It may be a regional thing, but when I go to metal shows here in South Florida, it’s quite close to being an even split, nothing what it looked like going to shows in the 90’s. Sometime in the 00’s, thanks to bands like Killswitch and then all the shitty emo metal that came out after, chicks started digging metal.

Music isn’t as clicky as it was in my youth. Hell, even I‘m a fan of both metal and rap most certainly due to the era I grew up in. I’m sure there’s always going to be pockets of metal heads, but overall the younger generation just listens to whatever makes their head bob, regardless of the genre.

Yeah, I don’t know who any of the endorsee’s are but for one or two and I’m OK with that. Let the kids have their time, their way. I may not like most of it for myself but I’m OK with that too. There’s plenty of stuff out there I still dig.

I guess I should’ve specified saying in the rock/metal territory. Country has always been huge and always will be.

I feel like there’s been hardly any new bands in the last 20ish years or so that play high gain shit that can really fill up a place… save for acts like periphery and polyphia. Djent and prog is not my thing at all, but LOADS of people are into it, and many younger kids are getting into instruments over that stuff. When I was a kid the nu metal stuff is what got me into heavy music and that stuff was huge back then. Every single one of those shows could pack out a legit venue. Nowadays you look at new acts coming out and they can’t even fill up a place that has a 2000 capacity venue. I live in Denver for reference. Because people just don’t care as much about rock and metal anymore. The acts that can pack a house are the same acts that have been around forever.

Edit: I’ll add to this I was working out with a group of guys from my work and literally 1 out of 7 knew who Guns N’ Roses was when welcome to the jungle came on lol.

how does any adult male, especially ones working out not know who GNR is? i can understand not knowing every song, but Slash must be the most recognizable rock star ever, the song is played at every sporting event in history.. like you really gotta be living under some kind of special rock to not know who guns and roses is. do they know who the rolling stones are?? like how were you brought up that this happened?? id be the weird dude asking all sorts of questions trying to get to the bottom of how this could occur lol

^ Special rock

@Bram576 - 311 loves playing Red Rocks

I think it’s called being full of shit…

I think all "natural" tones from the guitar have been explored easily. Distortion tones are becoming irrelevant due to the simply endless possibilities of slightly tweaking them. I guess the future might be just be digital boops and beeps made by digital amps or computers. Many years ago I went into Mars music in Arlington tx and played through a Roland guitar synthesizer setup. Don't know if those still exist but it was a blast playing through it. Who knows what the future of guitar holds, but I think it's time for something new before it fades into history.

I don’t think so. The sound of stringed instruments made centuries ago are still loved today. There are certain sounds that touch humans. It’s why Eddie Cochran, Hendrix, Sabbath, Cream, Creedence, CSN, AC/DC, Priest, Queen VH, Metallica, AIC and even Korn get re-discovered by generations. It’s why we have 20 somethings all around the world putting on pink bandana’s and playing music straight out of 1986. Young Country artists still obsessing over Hank, Johnny and Waylon. A teenage kid today is hearing Mean Streets for the first time and thinking that G is direct from God’s ball sack. Beeps and boops are nothing new and not what guitar needs to stay relevant? It just needs human beings.

What is a new tone or sound today ?
Djent was 10 almost 15 years ago. It certainly isn't new anymore.

As far as music from the last 2-3 years goes I am hearing much cleaner sounds. More in common with hip hop and R&B than anything.
Check out max ostro

I was talking about a straight tone not creativity or talent. I haven't heard a new "tone" in 20 years, but there is plenty of new creative players out there keeping guitar alive.

I think the electric guitar has been pretty completely explored by now, at least from the standpoint of anything on the scale between clean and distortion.

At this point, I think the most real change we’re going to see will be iterative changes, small tweaks and maybe improvements to gear that slowly pulls the needle in the direction of better sound and playability, but I kind of doubt there are many, if any, entirely new soundscapes the guitar is capable of producing that have yet to be discovered.

I don’t really think there’s much more than can be done with straight up “new” guitar tones without getting into turning the instrument into a synth or MIDI controller to make other instruments’ sounds.

I don’t mind this though. The guitar already allows for almost infinite expression, just like any other good stringed instrument. And like any good instrument, there is still as much variation in the music that can be created through it as there are people left to make it.

IMO, tones are defined by the stuff we heard when we were younger. Nobody had Tim Henson tone 20 years ago. But some young players will hear Polyphia and that tone will define what they consider good tone.

After decades of chasing I finally settled on a cranked Super Lead as “the tone” for me. Gee, I wonder why?

A Les Paul into a 4 x12 with greenbacks and a JMP or old Plexi will never be improved upon. I tried for to many years. :m17:

That’s my thought, but it’s a reality. I mean there’s literally hundreds of videos on YouTube with teens and young adults not knowing certain bands or whatever. The reality is if you stuck 30 18 year olds in a room and played battery, or Taylor swifts number one song. All of them would know that and MAYBE a few would know the Metallica song.

I’d have to agree
