Thx for posting up your youtube SmallBox vids....especially the one with the Sat Switch mod.

Curious how many of SB owners out there have modded theirs with the Saturation Mod....seems there are not many of these floating around out there (other than yours) within Youtube-ville.

I'm still waiting on delivery of a special order SB with the Sat Switch mod (foot-switchable, will have additional Master on front supposedly) Dave claims the Sat Switch modded into the SB can start jumping in the range of the other 100 watter's gain capabilities (mentioned in an email from him)...possibly he's found a new range or capability for the SmallBox?

My reasoning for the modded SB is to have a killer 50w amp (sort of a 1 trick pony) and also get it as versatile as possible ranging from it's great Plexi/Cleans to a more aggressive/juicy/crunchy range for both hard rock (VH, Cult, STP, Velvet Revolver, etc.) and metal adventures (thinking older Testament, Infectious Grooves, Suicidal Tendencies, AIC).

I'm not really a pedal hound (other than a mxr10band first in the effects loop for current rig w/delay), and I'll wait to play the SB before pulling the wallet on a boost such as the Koko.
Already have a Fulltone OCD laying around, guessing that'll be an experiment.

Bottom line, can't wait for this thing to arrive....any thoughts/ideas/experiences greatly appreciated.
Anyone else modding up their SmallBox?

Cheers, and happy Sunday

I have the Sat Switch option on mine, and it is footswitchable. It´s really good to have this option, but the BE channel is fantastic and I spend most of my time on it.
That being said, if I need to order it again, I would ask David to do exactly the same.

I have had my Smallbox for almost a year now and I love it more every time I plug in. It is an amazing amplifier.

Thx for the feedback btsimoes!
The amp is currently in transit from Cali to TX via Indiana, can't wait for its arrival....

Have you tried a tung sol in the preamp instead of the jj? Really sounds good.

Interesting. Wonder if Dave has tried one?

I love my Wildwood Guitars version Smallbox! Has three (3) master volumes, little tighter on the gain channel and a wee bit more gain. BE channel has a footswitchable boosted mode with more gain and it's own master volume. Presence knob is on the back. This amp is so versatile and perfect for gigs!!

I have Tungsol on mine right now. Great option!

Uhm, this sounds like the perfect 50watter. When I played the stock SB, I wished it had a bit more gain and thump. How aggressive does this get? What other amps could you compare it to, if possible?

Just picked one up with a Brown Eye 4x12 .... sounds amazing

While the BE channel is absolutely killer and has more than enough gain for me, the sound that never fails to create a shit eating grin is the plexi channel dimed...... love it.

The only thing that I would put on a wish list is a little LED to tell me which channel I'm on by glancing at the front panel...but thats a tiny little gripe.

The perfect amp....

I have the original Small box and had it over a year now. It's a great sounding and versatile amp, but there are those times I wish it had a bit more gain. Even with an OD, I find it a little lacking. Don't get me wrong, I love this amp 95% of the time and don't play high gain stuff very often, so... I'm looking forward to Dave's announcement this summer for the 2016 SB changes. I'll be sending it out for the updates for sure.

Where are you setting the gain on the amp and are you running the OCD as a boost ?

Gain is all the way up and I'm using a Klon KTR

And I'm gonna assume that's on the BE channel. I've got the gain on my SB at about 2 o'clock and I'm boosting with a TC Spark Boost in mid mode so basically a modded tubs screamer. I'm getting gain somewhat similar to George Lynch on Back For The Attack. I find using a TS type pedal with the SB the amp still has an open tone , the pedal with gain at zero and vol about 2 o'clock adds some grit and saturation but it doesn't get all compressed like my Splawn does

I saw OD and mistook it for OCD

I finally settled on eq settings on my small box. I'm using a suhr modern with ssh+/ssv pickup.
Pres 6
Bass 6
Mids 5
Treb 6
BE - Gain maxed
Plexi ch i always have the bright switch on middle bright and the volume and gain wherever i feel like setting it at the moment.

Volume at 4 is where the magic is. volume around 3 you get more pre amp sound so sometimes i like that with the koko boost set to the left side with the mid q knob as noon, volume at 9 o'clock.

I love the torpedo lives ir for the friedman v30 with the sm57. I have tried the ownhammer cabs and they sound like crap through the torpedo live. I hear a ton of peoples clips with them and they sound great but i haver never found one i like.

Folks this thing s the real deal. If you want classic Marshall to 80s hardrock tones I don't know how you top it. This amp sings while punching hard. For those that have this amp... Try my settings and let me know if you like them
Sat on
Pres. 2:00
Bass. 2:00
Mids. 12:00
Treb. 12:00
Gain. Maxed
Vol. 12:00

After having my amp for some time now i have really settle on the exact same settings just not as loud! The key for me was getting the treble down and raising the bass and pres. I think its helped me to get my torpedo live really dialed to.

You always have great tone man, whatever the amp, love the Friedman too! \m/
