Help: Erect or Eggie5 for high gain?

Guys,

I'm jonesin' for a high gain module, so I thought I would ask this esteemed(!) bunch to pick one...

I've owned many Mesa recifier heads (and enjoyed them), but have never played an Erect or EG-5 module. My most hi-gain module currently is an SL-2. I'm mainly a blues/rock player (Bonamassa/Trower, etc.), but I enjoy super-crunch when I pick up my EMG equipped guitar!

All comments appreciated!

I have had both but currently only have the EG5 and that makes me happy. I have an guitar with EMG I tune to B for really heavy stuff and I have played it through both the ERECT and EG5. From my point of view the ERECT is a great chunka chunka drop d power chord tone and it really sounds better than and Mesa I have actually played. The EG5 on the other hand can handle searing leads but also does rythm with more cut and definition IMO.

EG5 for sure man :). I love my EG5, and would never give it up! I found the E-rect to be like a good rectifier...with a bit of that fuzziness (in a good way) to it. If you like that Soldano SLO100 feel, get a EG5 for sure....it's like that but even bigger!

Eric

SL2 or EG5....both are incredible! SL2 is very warm/brown and EG5 has bit more hair. Both are perfect.

I didn't dig the Erect at all.....but I personally dislike the tone of rectos, so no big surprise.....

I love my erect but I have it set to a lower perceivable gain than my eg3/4 for example, so maybe for you the eg5 might work well. A lot of people like it, but I'm in the great minority that didn't bond with the eg5.

The EG3/4 has more gain than the SL2 as well, but definitely darker with more low mids.
Not according to Jeff. The gain is staging is SL > EG3/4 > SL2 > EG5. Not confusing eq with gain, I love the gain levels of both my SL & SL2, but the eq is too upper middy too me. I thought about trading them back in for an EG3/4 and EG5, but I don't need more gain, I just need them to be darker, more low-mid growl. Maybe I can change some resistors/caps to get both my SL's to have the EG eq ??? Any ideas guys ???

The EG3/4 does not have as much gain as a SL2, so you are correct there. The EG3/4 is a bit punchier and definitely darker than a SL2. I think for a "Marshally" module, you'll be good to go. The EG5 is not a "dark" module like the EG3/4. It has a flair of Soldano SLO100, with a really good mid-range cut (but not upper midrangey like a SL2). The EQ on the EG5 definitely will lend itself to get darker when the treble is rolled off to the 9-10 oclock range. It's the tightest, most percussive module Egnater makes. EG3/4 is much smoother and liquidy and very brown sounding.

Love my EG5. It's my go to rhythm module. Channel 2 is even more aggressive and IMO catered toward leads. I don't have the gain more than 1-2 O'clock and it is chunky as all fuckin get out. This being said it is a very refined and articulate distortion. No fizz or buzz. I have no experience with the Erect or SL2 but the EG5 has my vote.

Then from what you guys are saying the EG3/4 would be perfect for MY tone. The SL2 comes close, but only with the gain at no more than Noon, and with the mid & treble below 11 o'clock. So I'll probably swap out the SL2 for the EG3/4 because I don't wanna loose the SL.. For playing covers, the SL works awesome for some much stuff.. I was just practicing All Right Now and Hurt's So Good and holy cow, the SL nails that shit!

Thanks for the replies... does the EG5 get that Mesa "grind"? Sounds like it's pretty Marshally but in a good way - not JCM800 but Plexi with a great pedal?

Rockstarnick: I'd be ineterested if you find a mod for the SL2 - you guys are right about the upper mids. Still a great module but darker would be welcomed!

If you want a Rectifier grind...get an E-Rect. The EG5 is more Soldano SLO100. Has a great punchy articulate grind, but it's not a Mesa. Or get a Randall "Grail" which is probably the most "Mesa" of any module you're gonna find. From what I've heard, that module modded by Pete is pretty cool. Oh and if you think the SL2 is too bright, then the EG5 won't be your cup of tea. You need the EG3/4 man. That's their darkest module....

Eric

Go for the eg3/4 then, it's a sick module. I love it for my go to rhythm sounds more than the sl2 even. The eg3/4 is darker in comparison, but don't worry it's not a muted/muffled module. I love it at least!

Ok, I'm sure the 3 side of the EG3/4 will be perfect for MY tone, which tends to be kinda Van Halen II sounding. Question is, how high-gain does the 4 side get? I'm speculating, but I have a feeling it'll do Nickelback & Buckcherry type stuff easily..?? See the thing is, I don't really wanna spend $400 on a dedicated dual channel 'high-gain' module considering I'd probably only use it on 4 or 5 songs.

It's got a fair amount of gain on tap. You'd have no problem doing the Nickelback / Buckcherry type of stuff. It's a killer module that you won't regret getting :)

Eric

EG3/4 has enough gain to do Nickleback but it wont sound at all like their sound. They use Rectifiers. It will do Buckcherry though SL2 would be better.

For the original poster, if like Mesas, get the E-Rect. If youd prefer a Soldano / Diezel tone, get the EG5. Its all about preference. Both are great.

Agreed +1 :)

I think you'll be happy with the EG3/4. Since you don't use all of your SL2 gain, the lesser gain of the EG3/4 won't be a problem. And like Eric says - it's very brown.

It's so funny - whenever I'm trying to get a good rhythm tone, I'll play All Right Now and get it close. Then I'm pretty much happy with any classic rock stuff! Great rhythm sound.

Here are some clips with my EG3/4 but I think only the 3 channel. Clip one has a GMajor in the loop, Clip 2 has a GSP1101 in 4 cable mode and clip 3 is the GMajor again but with a HotPlate in silent mode. All 3 clips are using a PDI-09 and JJ EL34's.

Excuse the Jessie's Girl riff :) I was throwing down some sounds for my band mates to comment on as I play in a cover band as well. I really like the EG3/4, the B channel just sings.
