Herbert Channel 3 - fuzzy/troubleshooting

OK, I've replaced the 2 Nick had in circles. It was easy, I did it myself. BIG difference, Herbert is almost back to normal. Thank you very much, Nick!

That said...

It's more noisy than it used to be, especially the 3rd channel. Channel 2 is great & crunchy now and finally has the cleans it should have, however I still notice a little weirdness in the gain stage where tubes get a little breakup.

Does this mean I should replace the third cap too?

I've switched V1 & V3 with a few different tubes & it got a lot better. Still a little bit more noise than I wish it had. Maybe some other brand of tubes?

It would be a good idea to get some silicon caulking(type II(2) ONLY!!!) to put under the caps to give them some cushion from vibration. If you can't get new quick ties in there don't worry, they're not entirely needed, but if you want or are worried, run a healthy bead of silicon across the top of the two caps.

If I go to home depot & ask them for silicon caulking type II will they know what I'm talking about? I have 0 experience with any of these. Though I have the caps soldiered already can I still put some silicon from the sides?

Hey man,

You're welcome btw, but it was Pete's idea. Yes they'll know what type II is (pure silicon), just ask them that way there's no doubt. As long as you left room to get it under them. V-1 and V-2 is the critical low noise tube spots btw, not v-3.

Man, you have no idea how much I've missed this sound. I've been playing it all morning today & I definitely dig SED EL34s in it. This amp is irreplaceable :2thumbsup:

I've got like 15 Shuguang tubes from Doug´s tubes in addition to the set I had in it. I've pretty much tried every single one of them & ended up with the 2 I have now in V1 & V3. Is there a place to get higher quality tubes?

Replace V1

Hi Peter,

Tube change does not fix it. There is still a little weirdness/fuzziness in channel 2. Any suggestions?

I've tried a few preamp tubes for V2 & it sounds fuzzy. Should I order some more tubes & keep trying? Do I need some special tube for V2? Channel 1 & 2 sound like they are supposed to sound. Anything other than V2 tube that can cause this?
