Hello everyone,

this is my first post in this forum, I have been reading it from the very first thread until the very last one during the last few months, so despite the title I know another Herbert vs. VH4 theme would make some of you want to stab me, so this will be kind of a different topic :D

I know Diezel since the other guitar player in my band got a VH4 over the bay about six years ago.

I just wanted to tell you my story, please apologize my not so perfect English and the probably way too long post, but I feel the urge to tell you my story.

Currently I am still playing an older version of an Engl Savage 120, a quite good amp imho, but the VH4 easily walks all over it, especially in the clean section.

From the first second I heard the VH4 I knew Diezel was the way to go for tonal paradise, but as still being undecided whether the VH4 or the Herbert would better fit to my stile I read every review and discussion I could find on the net, (so now I am more ore less a theoretical Diezel expert ;)) and of course in the meantime I began to save money in order to afford one of the two, at least as a second hand.

I didn't know yet what odyssey was expecting me!! After saving enough for a second hand amp I went on ebay and won an auction for a VH4. Being the happiest human being in this very moment I ran to the bank (no, I don't have a credit card) and arranged the money transfer. A few hours later the seller informed me that the amp had experienced serious damage because due to very heavy rainfalls overnight, a lot of water got into his studio drowning the whole equipment. After a few days I got my money back and went on reading the Diezel forum.

Some weeks later I unfortunately won an auction for a Herbert. I said unfortunately because the whole thing was a fake. The "seller" screwed me, took the money and never sent an amp to me. This issue now has been forwarded to the police but I am not very confident to be honest, as I discovered that the guy is a professional defrauder from Romania (Though he stated living in Scotland and though he was in the position to answer all of my questions about the amp very precisely, so I didn't see any reason to loos my confidence, what a mistake!! :aww: ).

Anyway, after a month of damning the day when my father and my mother met the first time, I became more positive again and thought "Well, I have been very unlucky and even more stupid. But this could also be a sign to take the righthand path and go for a new Diezel through the official Swiss distribution, as advantage I will have lifetime warranty, the newest available amp version and an authorized tech in case something should break"

So over Christmas I mailed the distribution and have to say that I never have experienced a better service in my own life!! I wrote I needed to try both, Herbert and VH4 before buying, the distributor gave me a call and simply offered me to visit him at his place and take his own Herbert and VH4 with me for a whole week, so I could test them during rehearsal and decide which one to take!!!! I mean, this is amazing, here in Switzerland not one guitar shop would ever do that (and I know some since over a decade)!! This guy only knows my voice on the phone, but he is so endlessly kind and trustful!! I am unbelievably happy now and am really looking forward to next saturday, the day when I will take both (!!) amps and perhaps even a 4x12 cab with me. I already advised my girlfriend I will be locked in the rehearsal room for the entire weekend and that she shall not dare to disturb my musical extasy for no reason

After hanging up the phone I just thought I have to tell this on rigtalk, because after my deepest desperation I met such a nice person that really brought the sunshine back into my life! I mean I GASsed for years and finally I feel being in the right hands and know already that every Swiss Franc spent will be the worth of it!

And of course, you don't need to advise which amp would suit better to me, because I will be so goddamn lucky to make the decision by trying them in rehearsal situation which still I do not dare to believe it!!

Thank you for taking your time reading this, happy new year to all of you!

I hope everything works out! :) It's a hard decision to make, I had to choose between the Herbert and VH4 as well and I'm quite happy with my VH4! But, I want a Herbert too. :D

Hell of a story - almost like a small novel that brought a tear to my eye but left me feeling all warm and fuzzy... Bottom line, when you enter the Diezel Family, you'll be well taken care of from that day forward. They're incredible amplifiers made by incredible people.

Welcome aboard - do let us know which one you've chosen

good luck with your choice..its a tough one...but you will be a smiling either way!! keep us all posted

Great to hear it's all worked out man! Diezel really does have the best customer service department out of any company I have known. Enjoy your weekend of tone!

Thanks to you all for the kind words. Since yesterday I can't think about anything else, I think the next days waiting for saturday to come will be very though. making a decision even more

Allmighty Master Peter, I have a little question on this concern: do you have Herbert and VH4 in stock in Dillingen at the moment in order to send one to Switzerland when I made my decision? I suppose you all will be very busy due to the NAMM, but I need the new amp before end of February because we will record our new album then. As i am a Schwizerbüebli you may also simply send me a pm in german :D ;) Thank you

German is an easy language but I have to check
my wife´s Japanese

Hey,

sorry to hear you were cheated on ebay. Had a similar experience two years ago when I wanted to buy a used Rectifier. This sucks - I just dont get why there are such a******** around.

So I began saving money again and finally got a used Herbert - sooo much better than a Recto

@Peter
Meine Eltern kommen aus Sizilien, bestechung ist also meine Spezialität. Falls aber keine Gegenleistung kommt, dann... :gethim: :gethim: :gethim: :D

@DvE

Yes this is a really bad experience, sorry to hear about your's

May the force be with you Obiwan! :jedi: :force: :D
This is a tough decision my friend. Both are Diezel´s, no doubt. I own a Herbert but heavily gas a VH4.
It depends on what you want. If you are a Marshallguy (like me) go with the VH4. (???)( :scared:   )
But Richie Sambora is a Marshallguy to and he owned three Herberts.
Anyway....VH4 has more growl and is more raw imho. Herbert is huge and "easier" to play. It´s midcut feature is nice but like FourT6and2 said once, this feature is more for recordings. You can use it in a band situation too, but without midcut you´ll have a better place in the band mix. My midcut level is about 9 o`clock and the mids are turned to 3 o´clock. My treble and presence is very high too. Did i mentioned Marshall?!?!? :D I raised with this brand, but i always missed the low end and the low mids, that makes the sound huge. And this is Herbert!
I would heavily like to have a VH4 but not because it is the better amp...for me Herbert is the better amp. I simply would like to have one because it sounds so good.

You have to play them and decide. Play them, if there is a possibility, in your band. And don´t forget the cabinet! Believe me or not, but the best cabs for these amps are truly the Diezel cabs. They sound huge. You can neraly plug any amp to this cabs and the amps will sound very fine.

Dear Bato
Thank you for your kind advice, I have read tons of highly useful posts from you, also over at the Musiker Board forum.

As I said, I will be really lucky to "own" the Herbie and the VH4 (eventually together with a Diezel cab) simultaneously for a week. They will mainly be used at rehearsal as this will be their main field.

I play an Engl Savage 120 and the really disturbing thing apart from the rather average cleans is the sizzle and processed saturation. On one hand the amp cuts well through the mix, but on the other hand I feel like being hunted by a swarn of wasps.

So if the VH4 roars and grows more, there are lots of possibilities that i will go for this option, though the Herbie is said to have amazing cleans (which is also important to a certain extent). If you want to take your time, please feel free to listen to my band's sound at: www.darkmoon.ch and www.myspace.com/darkmoonmetal. I will of course make my own decision, but any advice from you Bato or anyone else would be highly apreciated.

To my ears, the VH4 has more balls. Channel 3 on the VH4 just rocks your face off and it does have a nice growl underneath it. But, it's also more compressed than the Herbert, which is something to think about. The Herbert has a better clean channel and I think you can get a more varied tonal spectrum out of the Herbert. However, the VH4 (to me) just felt right and has this mid-voicing that spoke to me. I do wish, though, that the VH4 was a little less compressed. But, I can live with that! :) Either way, you'll be in heaven.

I would think since the other guitarist in your band has a VH4 already that the Herbert would be a great compliment to that, rather than both of you getting almost identical sounds. Yes the 2 VH4's could be dialed in differently enough to give you some identity, but starting off with a completely different voice altogether and blending them into sonic bliss seems the smarter path for live dynamic and studio diversity both.

That's my take on it anyway. :D
