Herbert Tubes - what's stock?

I've given the 6550's the month off in favor of EL34BHT's mixed with Tesla E34L's. To my ears the slight increase
in compression makes the amp really sing. I would also like to post a pic of my settings and the settings on the two
BB Preamps I use. One makes Ch. 1 very Dumbleish and the second makes Ch. 2 - sound like Eric Johnson's is in the room.
I still say the Herbert has been stigmatized as a brutal metal beast, but if you want it never ceases to amaze you with
a boat load of untouchable tones. It's a freakin' illness that you won't shake when you get one.

P.S.

I've been using JJ ECC83's in the V1, V2 and V6. Laugh as you may, they are like butter in the Herbert.

Happy Jonesin' :rock:

Ok....so I have my herbert coming in on Tuesday.
I hope it has the outside Bias points so I can easily swap tubes.
I know on my Egnater/Randall amps when I did the tube swapping it was the OUTER PAIR and INNER PAIR.
How does it work with the 6 tubes?
Outer Pair, second inner pair and middle pair?
I liked a Mixture of EL34's and 6L6's in the Egnater/Randall amps.
Not sure if I want to put KT88's in the Herbert.... :lol: :LOL:
Might knock me down when playing!! :D

Herbert tube questions:

I understand the tubes in the Herbert can be paired into 3 different types, if ya really wanted to go this route... Couple questions about this, are teh tubes paired in the following fashion when looking at them from the back:
A A B B C C
Or are they paired such as:
A B C C B A

Furthermore, with the VH4 and 4S, there's a toggle that switches between 6L6 style tubes and EL34 style tubes. Am I assuming there are micro toggles for each pair or are all 6 tubes to be of the same classification. So you couldn't have, say, 2xKT88 2xEL34 2x6L6 in the mix...??

Thanks for these answers folks.

http://diezel.typo3.inpublica.de/tech-corner.3.0.html ;)

So powertubes layout is:

A = 3 + 4 (inner pair)
B = 2 + 5 (inbetweens)
C = 1 + 6 (outer pair)

Ventura for the toggle that VH4 has (swicht between 6L6/EL34) i don't know it in the Herbert,sorry.

Thanks again man... So I could throw in a set of KT77's, KT88's, and 5881's if I wanted to?!?!? That's sick!!

Peace,

Just throw in 6 KT88's and be done with it. :lol: :LOL:

Correct me if I'm wrong but those are pretty well the highest output tubes on the market nowadays are they not?? Something retarded like 50W a piece?? I guess it depends on the manufacturer and the circuit, but ya, that's nuts.

I think the mere fact I could mix and match to tailor my gnarl with sizzle is what's attracting me to the Herb. Whatever, I'll buy one, but I just need to make sure it's not insta-GAS and then not think it was a great idea once I paid for the damn thing.

Peace,
V.

nope....New Sensor just came out with KT120's. total ear deafening tube....but doubt they will be useable in the amps. I believe Papa said it would run way too hot. and i know with my 6550s that its plenty hot now.

and yes...you can run 3 separate pairs in the Herbies....complete bliss!!

Are you just straight up 6550's in your Herbster, Pauly??

I'm interested to know - I'd like to know what KT77's would sound like, mixed with 5881's and 6550's. That would be my "hmmmmmmmmmm" combination.

Peace,
V.

i was...but as always i got bored. now i have 4 -6550s & 2-EL34s. Sounds killer!!! :rock:
