I bought my Herbert used and it came with el34s. What tubes does the Herbert have when it is initially made and what other tubes sound good in the Herbert?

well that depends on when your herbert was made if its a older one it was
probable made with el34 and other tubes i guess depends on your preference
me i like KT88's others like el34 some like 6550's so its all up to u

Mine came with EL34s & 6L6s when i bought it in 04. Now i am fully digging the 6550's.

NICE!

what does the Herbert sound like with the 6550s. do you have any sound clips?

I´m more and more convinced by the EL34BHT from Magic Parts.

Good sounding ..... less troubles.

The 6550s sound awesome. More headroom. Just better overall dynamics to me. Doesnt have the EL34 grind...but makes up for it IMO with the nicer dynamics in the EQ. I just recorded some tracks with it and compared them to my old tracks and WOW!! Just much better in the mix & overall to me.

Peter...whats up with the new EL34BHTs?? u like em more than the 6550's??

I just ordered those the other day and they will be in my amp in a few days. Ill let you all know how they sound after our first tour date in Vegas.
Im hoping for good things
I was gonna try the 6550's like everyone was talking about before but since peter said to go for the new El 34's then i said ok... i do like el34's. I had the El34bstr's before and i thought they were ok...

You'll love 'em! I just outfitted my Herbert with a full set and it sounds magical! They do seem just a touch brighter than the SED =C= 34's that were previously in there, but that could be due to the bias now being set correctly (SED's were unbalanced and biased to high). That said, when I say a touch I mean literally just a small bit. Overall they sound fantastic!

eww..brighter eih..? I want warmer :aww:
oh well...maybe if they are brighter in a sparkle kind of way that would be good.
We will be recording in the studio right after this band fireflight next month and i want a good tone.

Uh no. Correction on my part. I just spent the better part of an hour with my Herbert and indeed I was dead wrong. They're actually warmer and less, I don't know, sterile maybe? Really fat, warm, and crunching. Definitely emphasizes the low mids and bass chunk inherent in the amp. Seems even tighter than before if that's possible

So, why the about-face? Well, I realized the last guitar I played through the amp was one with a rather bright tendency to it and also a thinner sounding pup than my regular gigging/recording guitars. Once I strapped those on and plugged in, I immediately realized I'd given an incorrect assessment in my previous post. Trust me Rob, you will dig the hell out of these. I'm happy that Peter is favoring them since I really didn't want to go to 6550's if I didn't have to as I was in love with the 34 tone in this head. So yes, killer tubes, killer amp. All around greatness!

Now I will go with 6550's in my forthcoming VH4.....

Not to rock the boat too much...but i just did some recording with the 6550s in my Herbie & compared to a recording i did a few months back with the 34s...IMO the 6550s totally killed it. Nicer mix tones. Better over the spectrum. Dont get me wrong..think my Herbie tone with the 34s was great but i def prefer the 6550s overall. Better balance. Better tone to me over the spectrum. When i get some clips i will post them. i used the identical mic setup, identical cabinet & identical guitar. I guess i just really dig them in my Herbert.

for some reason my herbert with el34 lacks bottom end, does anyone know if changing to 6550s or 6l6s will help?

Really? which ones are they and how do you have them biased? Also, what cab are you using? Mine has thunderous bottom end with 34's (both the SED's and Ruby's)

I noticed a huge difference in bottom end form the EL34s to the 6550s. 6550s had way more bottom. Could also be that Boogie cab that you are using too!

What Peter is saying is that he likes those EL 34 BHT for an EL 34 tube in and of itself and I agree. I happen to think the 6550 tubes are the way to go so I agree with Pauly

Oh well... i already ordered them. Now im reaaaallly curious as to what they will sound like.
Peter said get the new EL-34's so i did...
..i even asked about the 6550's and he seemed more in favor of the 34's. What can i say. I'll find out soon though...

why would the boogie cab cause the lack of bottom end, and by the way you are a great human being!

I used a Boogie cab a while back & it just seemed very thin to my ears. You would hear a major difference with a better cabinet (like the Diezel cabs or even a Mills) something made better & to handle high power heads. I think Avatar cabs sound better than Boogies...and they are 1/2 the price. I honestly just dont like many Boogie products. Think its overpriced junk. Try a different cabinet (a friends or @ a music store) and you will see the difference

Thanks for the great human being compliment..,, i think ;)
