ok last question ( or 2) where did you get your 6550s and what is the advantage of having a front loaded cab.

I got my 6550s from Virginia Tube Audio. Great people to deal with! But you can get them from Dougs Tubes or Tube Depot also..both great places to deal with.

And the Front Loaded cab is just the tits!! Tight sounding. Much tighter than a rear loaded cab. Great projection. Just great cabinets. I prefer them to a Rear Loaded...justy my taste

hope that helps! Good luck!

I'm compelled to respond here with regard to the new FL cab. IT. IS. AMAZING. I mean, it's unreasonably good and better than any cab I've ever used or heard (I mean Bogners, Mesa, Marshall, Randall, Avatar, etc.. etc..). I simply couldn't believe the astonishing difference. I never believed the hype - especially given the price tag - and was skeptical even upon first tryout. After being blessed with the chance to try one out again, I left dazed and convinced! I'm getting one, and quite probably 2. Yes folks, they really are that good and worlds apart from others.

i have had luck with the SED 6550 Wing Cs.

and yes...the new Diezel cabs are the SHIIIITTTTT!!!

It's not easy to make up my mind about what tubes to use, and I haven't found an answer here yet, so I'll try to explain what kind of sound I want and hope that someone here can help me.

I bought my Herbert used with EL34 tubes in it. I love the sound, but I would appreciate a little more midrange "bite" and a little less compressed sound out of channel 3. I have the midrange turned to full on all three channels, and of course I don't use the mid-cut function. My cabinet is a Mesa 4x12" Rectifier-cab with Celestion V30 elements.

I have to turn the master volume up to at least 10-11 o'clock to get the sound I want from channel 3. Below that and it just sounds too compressed. I mean... People run out of the room screaming with their fingers in their ears, that's how loud it is
Does anyone here have a recommendation of what I need to do to get my "perfect sound" without blowing peoples eardrums? Is it possible at all with just changing the tubes?

I bought the Herbert for its metal qualities, but I'm more and more amazed about the clean channel and the channel 2 minus setting the more I play through it. It's the best amp I've owned so far, that's for sure. It really emphasizes the differences in my different guitars and the strings I use like no other amp I've owned, and I've owned several different Engl's, Mesa's, Marshall's, Peavey's and even a B-52. If I could only make it sound a little less compressed without loosing any midrange I would be truly happy :-)

try all KT88's i have all 6 in my Herbert and i find i have to scale back
the bass i also use a mesa cab and i have have ruby 12ax7 AC5 HG+
in V1 and V2 and ruby 12ax7 AC5 HG when i did the preamp change
it seemed the amp was breathing better and if that doesnt work

What brand should I choose? The EL34's in my Herbert are Electro Harmonix, and it seems like it's either that or JJ's if I want KT88 tubes. The Electro Harmonix are a little cheaper. Anyone know of any reason to pay a little extra for the JJ's?
I couldn't find the 12AX7 Ruby Tubes there, but could perhaps the Tung Sol or Electro Harmonix 12AX7's be just as good?

I've never compared different brands of tubes, so if anyone know what tubes would be greatest for dynamics and lots of mids I really would appreciate some advice here

Seems like they dont have them anymore go to doug's tubes for your preamp tubes
and for power amp tubes i go with KT88's myself

hey HumdinGer do you hae any recordings of urherbert on that mesa cab

Just used up my last spares of EL34s so I'm looking at new tubes now too. KTs sound cool, think I shall get a pair for when these ELs die and then experiment lots.

What happens if you put an unmatched tube back in out of curiosity? I know you shouldn't but I don't know why...

I was wondering that too. I also wonder what the difference between the impertinences are?

Unbalanced current draw and one tube will work more or less then the other it is paired with. It will strain tubes, vut their life span down and should something drastic happen, it could red plate and blow. This could lead to additional amp issues...none good.

Not yet, I'm afraid. I haven't owned my Herbert for very long, so for now it's just been experimenting with it's sound (witch by the way is awsome). I do have some new songs though, so maybe there'll be a demo with the Herbert with EL34's and Mesa cab soon.
