I plugged the midi pedal back in and cycled the channels and now everything works fine.
Maybe it was the pedal ?

When I first got my VH-4, I thought that it had a problem with MIDI.
It turns out that Diezels are just pretty sensitive to low-quality MIDI cables, which can make it seem like they've got issues.
As soon as I switched to a decent-quality MIDI cable, all of my switching issues magically disappeared.
