Hermansson modified amp owners (current and former)

I've been tempted for sometime to get a Hermansson modded Rectifier. To me all the clips around YouTube sound pretty good, and even though most of them seem to be dialled towards that very specific Meshuggaish higain tone, there's plenty of samples showing that it can do almost everything else as well.

However, I can see that there was a slight boom of Hermansson's around internet few years ago. Since it has settled, and I can see that people have sold their Hermansson modded amps. Question is, what made you sell those amps and if they're really are after all "one trick ponies"?

To be honest i found mine to be very fizzy and hollow. I can tell in the videos as well

BTW I’ve had 3

Currently own three Hermanssons, have owned four in total. The one that I sold was an early triple rectifier he did (not certain if it is the same as the current recto mod as this was ~2018 vintage) which I sold because it was still very much a rectifier. There’s a YouTube video that compares multiple modded rectos (including a Hermansson and GZ) which kind of exemplifies my point. They’re all still rectos….which is fine but not something I personally tend to get along with.

In the current stable I have a one off two channel full rebuild Marshall (not the current 3/5GS offering), a four channel Soud City PA, and a 5GS/3GS two channel Marshall. These are pretty foundational to what I look for; have Marshall DNA but enough beyond that which is not just a Jose mod that they are interesting and versatile. Can cover a full gauntlet from plexi to high gain without getting flubby…super responsive to dynamics, can also be setup to cover that more liquid “bounce” under the fingers kid of feel. Honestly, just awesome all around.

Own a Marshall 5 stage currently, had a recto.

Sold the recto because to cut the highs got very very fizzy. And it went from 0 to 100 on tightness… like unless I was using a 7 string I wouldn’t consider reaching for it.

I really dig my Marshall, ton of fun to play, can be cutting and defined without being harsh. Still has the tightness but it seems like it doesn’t go 0-100. Frequency range is just much more pleasing overall.

Hermanssons to me are the most fun amps to play- it feels like other amps have a delay comparatively. They have excellent cleans and leads as well, and clips don’t do them justice

I own 2 currently and have owned 4 total. I have a Triple G and a 5GS Marshall. I previously owned a 3 channel triple and a 3GS Marshall. It is not a one trick pony, but it is not the most versatile amp. I sold some and came back because I find there is nothing like a Hermansson. The feel is unique, the sound is unique. I also will say the sound is not for everyone. There is no one size fits all for the amp world and this is no exception. If you want a super tight amp that sounds like his clips, then it is probably for you. If you find the sound in the clips to be bad then it isn't for you.

It isn't a rectifier sound. It isn't a traditional marshall sound. They are their own thing. I have stock rectifiers/marshalls and also Ground Zero modded marshalls and mesas. They all have their place. It just depends on what you want.

^^ this

Also my old modded recto, and modded Marshalls were never overly fizzy. Bit more upper mids on it than a traditonal sounding amp but that’s why I like his gear. Maybe I got lucky.

Hermansson’s are just a specific flavor that isn’t for everyone, but nothing else does what they do the same way. I kept my Triple Recto Rev F Hermansson since I liked that one best. My next favorite was the Rev G Dual and had also a single recto and 5GS Marshall and Carlsbro of his. They all had the Hermansson sound and feel. I just felt the Triple F I kept was the best version of his flavor

Have a Hermansson PA and it’s so gnarly. Love it. Guy is a master at the height of his powers!

Viva la Hermansson!!!

I had a Hermansson Laney PA. Absolutely a killer amp. Three excellent channels. Channel 3 definitely had that sound that his amp have, but it certainly wasn't a one trick pony even on that channel. Channel 2 was a super cool Marshall/Hot rodded Marshall tone. Great clean on channel 1 as well. Plus it looked super fucking cool.
I would still have it but my cat needed back surgery after an injury that cost me just shy of 10k. I sold most of my gear that had any value.

I had that amp made back in 2012-2013 and Steve k bought it of me after

Tell us more about that two channel full rebuild please 🤔

Had a three channel recto mod. Some very cool tones, but also hard to dial in for my ears. Could quickly change from fizzy to muffled and scooped to honky. Was definitely tight and did the whole cleanup with the volume knob at high gain thing. But ultimately an expensive pony that did a trick I didn’t feel like I absolutely needed.

It was prior to the standardized versions of the mods, I’ve had it for 10yrs at this point. Bit more “hard rock” oriented, I actually tend to find it has a more useable range than the 5GS. The heavy channel is more like a four gain stage and the clean channel is a three. With boost available for either. The three gain stage has a bit rounder plexi character

Thank you for the information! Cool vid!

That amp sounds amazing!!!

Thank you all for chiming in.

I'm still hesitating if I should go through the mod route or not. I bought my '99 Rev. G from the original owner and I'd like to keep it as it is. Then again, Hermansson's mod is quite the sound I'm looking from a Recto - for example the @Mept2 clip sounds fantastic. For me the best Recto sound is definitely the boosted sound like the one on Meshuggah's Destroy Erase Improve album. I'm not too into the loose traditional Rectifier sound and I'm spending 99% of my playing time on the orange vintage channel anyways.

Need to still think about it...
