High Gain Video of Wizard Modern Classic 6L6

Haven't tried them in mine. Not sure if it's possible with C transformers?

I know there were many revisions and options.

Curious of the possible differences.
I’d have to ask @RedB4Black the year.

What speakers are you using?

@Bram576 dude that video sounds incredible. I've never heard a 6L6 MC under a mic and that is some sick ass tone. Some of those passages are album ready, I wouldn't do a thing to them.

And people say they don't record well, hah.

Thanks man! I didn’t realize you got a hell razor, how are you setting yours up?

Excellent video! I ve recently bought some new mics so I'm gonna make a new wizard mtl video soon!
Thanks man! Eager to hear your stuff, always sounds insane. Really like that folkesson you got.

I honestly would not run the amp unboosted for what I do. I’ve come to think our taste is fairly similar lol.

I setup my Wizards very similarly to how you do. On the HR I've landed on setting the Presence just above 8 (3:00) most of the time, which is right about where it takes the blanket off the amp and gets it sounding pretty crispy, just before it gets too harsh and out of balance. Mids and Treble hover around noon maybe a bit less, but on this amp the Mids also sound great cranked up higher so there's a decent usable range there. I also do the slightly lower Treble, slightly higher Presence thing because it shifts the most audible highs upwards and makes the amp sound more articulate and modern. Bass is up pretty high, but the low end has a lot of tweakabiltiy between Depth and Bass, so I'm still messing with different settings there.

Bright 2 is around 6 (1:00), and right now I'm experimenting with setting Bright 1 pretty low, like right around 4 (11:00) which I think tames some of the highs and pick attack which I'm finding can get maybe too pronounced, maybe too spikey if you let them, but dialing this amp is a balancing act in a way a lot of amps are not, so maybe I'm liking Bright 1 low because I have something too high somewhere else.

The Gain knobs are still totally up in the air, I'm still twisting to figure out if / how they all interact with each other. Sometimes I set the amp's gain low and put a Dirty Tree in front, which surprisingly sounds great. Most times I plug straight in and pull all or most of the boosts and go that way. Setting the gains high doesn't necessarily sound less tight than using a boost, just different. I'm honestly kinda shocked how well an amp this tight takes boosts when you dial it for them.

don’t know if it’s your cab or 6l6s but you get a fuzzy top end almost recto-ish that I don’t get with my el34s which is cool, on top of a modern hifi SLO-ish ‘present’ bass and a clanky and (i refer to it as) slutty midrange.

there’s this psycho-acoustic thing with big amps that ime once you experience you can then notice even via phone clips.
my Wiz and previous SLO and Gower SE modded Marshall had that too and I get it whilst hearing your vid on my phone.

i can also tell how unforgiving it must feel under the fingers just by hearing how you got it dialed in and crossreferencing my experience. but gaud dayumn it tracks like it’s on rails.

I got MC1 at a time when I was practicing a solo for an upcoming track using my XTC 101b so my chops were up.
I did a trial take with the Wiz and immediately sold the xtc bc of the MC's added articulation on fast passages up the board without thinning out.
Lately I haven’t played as much bc of kids and every time I try to solo with the MC1 I wish I had the xtc lol. cracking amp that too but too much character to work with

It’s a 2021 I believe.

Transformers are interesting in this one too. It’s not the C transformer like in my 50w el34. It’s actually a little smaller. Not that that means anything. It’s a 50w amp, but it has the same design as what he used in my old 6L6 MTL and KT66 HR ( just for 50w).

This amp is killer, one of the better Wizards I’ve owned. It’s the amp that amp that moved me from 100w Wizards to 50w versions. Now I own 3 50ws. Would be interested in hearing this one next to my 50w el34 with C transformers.

Our eq settings are fairly similar here, I do think the gain settings and different push pulls though you can get a wildly different result. Every time turn it on seems like I dial in a different sound. It’s a killer amp. I think since I boost my MC when I use it and it gets fairly close to the hell razor… but the hell razor is more nasty, why I’m ready to move on from it.

Yeah, I think it may be the tubes or the transformer, not sure… it’s killer though.

I’m in the same boat with the kiddos. My playing has definitely suffered in the last few years just with being so busy, but wouldn’t change it for anything.
