Hipshot tuners?

They seem to be all the rage right now, but I haven't tried them.

I like the idea of the open gear thing because that'd likely make them lighter. However, I don't like the idea of debris being able to get to the gears. What are you guys' experiences on that?

Kinda torn on the look as well. Hate the trapezoid buttons, but I see they have other stuff available as far as buttons go.

Also, the universal mounting plaque... kinda looks like sweeping dirt under the rug, LOL. Do the plates weight a lot?

I've had a few sets and they work great. Like you said, there are multiple buttons available, but the "standard" trapezoid is meh. The Universal mounting plate is kinda cool and can't say the look of it ever bothered me. It weighs next to nothing as well. Super high quality stuff overall.

I have a set of their satin chrome locking tuners on my warmoth build.....I think they're great. And I love the trapezoid buttons ?

Mine don't have the plate though

I have them on every guitar I’ve owned the last 8-10 years, and I love them. Totally legit. Only one issue ever - one of the plastic spacers below the button cracked, but was probably user error over tightening. I’ve probably had 30-40 sets.

Hipshot is in my neck of the woods. Few towns over, few miles outside of Ithaca, wine country.
Haven't tried any of their products, but know people who love the stuff.

I used to swear by Gotoh, but I must have gotten a couple of sets through the years that have been so-so. Same with Grover.

I’ve bought a bunch of them; no complaints. High gear ratio, all mine have been smooth in operation, and even the locking ones aren’t too hefty. The universal mounting plate works great when you can’t or don’t want to drill holes for whatever reason. Also looks fine. Unless you were looking up close it just kinda looks like they were made that way.

They come in a variety of finishes, sizes and button styles too.

Put a set with the plates on my 335 so I didn't have to put new holes in it (though will likely cause uneven finish aging overtime like a pickguard). The plates aren't really heavy, but may recommend against putting them on an SG that already had the neckdive option installed, though.
