Hot Rod Deluxe........................

So my buddy shows up to my place with this new HR Deluxe with this orange with black racing strips today and asked if I could bias it up and give it the "good ole seal of approval".I open it up and got the meter out and then proceeded to fire it up.I set the EQ rather neutral as I've never really played one before.I used the Suhr S2 with vintage HSS setup to see what these are all about. This thing was harsh and hell so I swapped some power tubes and put some lower gain tubes in it and got it sounding much better I thought  I then said fuck this thing and fired up the M4 with T/D and just went to the D side and about collapsed, this wasn't even funny man  the fucking tone from the T/D was just stellar and alive just beautiful and full!!!Thought I would share this as I was just blown by how good the Eggy sounded in comparison to the other guy

I had a Blues Deluxe for a while.

Decent clean tone out of those fender Blues/Hot Rod series amps. Completely useless drive channel. I kept on trying tube/speaker swaps, convincing myself that the amp was good.

Then my Egnater showed up. :D

On the positive side, I had it for a few years, never had a problem with it, and the clean channel did take pedals VERY very well.

Despite those amps actually having a drive channel, I consider them "pedal amps". Just a good (if not plain vanilla) clean tone to build from.

The clean was good after a numerous tube swap, you are correct on the drive, absolutely horible but it sounded good with an old Rat pedal in the clean.I guess when I plugged in the T/D I wasn't expecting such a great diff in clean response  It was absolutely magical when I hit the standby on the M4,I immediately finished up with the amp and drove it back :D We are lucky to have stumbled upon such a great system!!Bruce I love you man

This is what I have been going through trying to find a backup amp. I feel the need to have one. My MOD 50 is very reliable, I just feel with two guitar players on stage you need to make preparations for emergencies. It's just that everything in the price range that you want to spend "back up amp" kind of money on, doesn't sound very good ... 'cause we're spoiled! Rebel 30 combo might have to be it. That's why I was hoping for the head version, but it is not to be, yet. Marshall Haze and Orange Twin Terror are on the short list too since they do about the same wattage and have two channels.

I bought the little Blackstar head as a backup. Sounds very good, super compact and does have enough volume to get thru a gig should disaster strike.

3Mile...

Randall RM20 head. Try to score one cheap. Then you can basically just pop in your drive module, and you're good to go!

Next to my Mod50, my RM20 is just my favorite thing. Awesome little amp with great features.

Man, you guys are going to laugh but that damn little Crate Power Block does the job. Sounds darn good and it's so small and light, just keep it under your seat in the car. Plus you can run a wet/dry rig with it. It's a really cool/portable little deal. Takes pedals well too.

Hey Nick, so the Randall RM20 will take Egnater modules?

Only one of the channels, but yes. It doesn't function as a 2-channel amp.

Yeah, the RM20 can only access the A channel, but it also has a built in TS808-esque gain boost with it's own volume control. So it's a nice little rig to have a drive channel preset with the module, roll back your guitars volume for cleaner tones, and then have more saturation and volume using the built in footswitchable RM20 boost.

Dude, I have a Power Block too. It's a loud little tank. Great thing to keep in your car as a backup.

I just wish Egnater would mod it so it could take dual channel modules. That would be so cool. Great small gig rig then!

Yep, good call Nick ... Randall RM 20, Randall Plexi module, Xotic BB and the built in boost. Could get you through a gig for sure. Lots of people have Crate Power Blocks. Great back up amp but I still think that would be a let down after the Mod 50. The Randall would be in the same world I'm familair witha nd it was designed by Bruce, so I'm sure it ROCKS!!!

Don't get me wrong, it's a big "let down" from the Mod, but to get you through the rest of a gig while sounding pretty good, and being very small and very lightweight, it's really cool. But, I'm sure the RM20 would be a lot more fun though

I'd asked Jeff about modding an RM20 to take dual channels. Unfortunately, there's not enough room in the chassis for the necessary board. Bummer!

I think ultimately an E2/new Eggy Power amp combo will be the bee's knees. We'll just have to wait a year or more before it's available. OTOH, that gives us time to save up!

How about this then... RM20 with a Dave Friedman modded Brahma and a Xotic BB. There would be absolutely ZERO letdown after a MOD 50 with that setup, I guarantee. In fact, anything Dave F touches in an RM20 would be pretty amazing I think. RM20 is a fantastic sounding little amp!
