How do I restring these vintage tuners with the holes in the shaft?

I've got this relic Tele that I'm FINALLY going to put new strings on. I bought this thing used like 8 or 9 months ago and God only knows how old the strings were then lol

They're the ones with the holes in the shaft of the machine head. It's been YEARS since I restrang one of these. Last I remember, you pull the string taught and measure 2 tuning keys past the one you're using and cut it there, then stuff them down the hole and start tuning. Is there a generally accepted way to restring these for best tension so no chance of slipping and tuning issues?

Its not that bad. put maybe 1/4 inch length in the hole & wind CCW.
Keep the string taught.

Good to see you again Matt

Stretch the strings a bit before final wind up tuning

I have two luxxtones with these tuners, I always measure two tuners past the one I'm stringing, seems to work quite well, for the last two strings I just guesstimate.

I like extra wraps around the post for the G and D strings to get more angle over the nut. And I don’t use the hole for the high E. I use extra string there too and I just wrap it around twice on top of the string laid straight across and hold it against the headstock while winding it in. It winds in under that portion that was laid across and sort of locks it in.
