How does a EG3/4 cut through the mix?

Hi,

I could play a EG3/4 for a short time - glorious, liked it a lot (feel and sound). But playing alone in your prctise room and playing live wit the band is a totally different thing.

Those who played it live: Does the EG3/4 cut through - especially when playing lead guitar?
How does it compare it to an SL, played live?

Cheers and best wishes

Can't help totally as I have not played the EG3/4 with a band. But have heard some say that it doesn't cut the best.

Good news is the EG3/4X sounds fantastic and I can't imagine it not cutting through!! So pick up a EG3/4, send it to Nick and have him do the X mod and you'll be gold man.

EG34, stock, is great if you're in a single-guitar band, and you like really smooth tones.

In a 2 guitar band situation, with another person playing am amp with bite, the EG34 gets lots.

The EG34X, however, has balls, smoothness, cut... all the good stuff. PM me if you're interested.

Definitely diggin the EG34X a lot. I agree 100% with Nick here. If you want dark smokey tones....the EG34 is it...if you want smokey tones, with a bit of upper mid bite ....then the EG34X is awesome.

I know folks like muudrock own on the EG34...or EG34X. I sold him my second EG34X, and he's really diggin it. If he's digging it...I know anyone that loves the EG34 will like the EG34X! :)

Agreed!
I never had trouble cutting with the EG3/4 , even with another guitar player on stage. But.....I'm a treble nazi and have been known to walk over to the other guys amp and turn the highs down...

With V30 speakers, the EG3/4 has enough cut because it has such a good midrange--this is where your live tone is made or lost IMO. FWIW, I also changed the tube board treble bleed cap value from 1000uf to 500uf. The EG3/4X has a slightly different mid curve than the stock 3/4 and to my ears actually isn't as bright on the top end as the stock module. My 3/4 is brighter than the 3/4X I got from Eric. Go figure???

Hi men,

thanks a lot for your replies. I own the SL2x - is the EG3/4x similar in the characteristic? Or how does it compare to the SL (which I like a lot as a stock module)?

Muudrock - I just didn't get the point - I'd expected the EG3/4x more trebly than the stock module - which I think, the SL2x is compared to the SL2 - but I haven't played the SL2 stock yet. Am I wrong?

What does the x-mod do? And where can it be done? Nick? And - would it be hard to remod it?

Cheers

Modding the modules from SL2 -> SL2X -> SL2 is no big deal...same for EG34 -> EG34X -> EG34. It is easy to revert it.

Ed,
You're not wrong. Different module starting point though. The SL2X is a different beast IMO. It is much brighter than the EG3/4X. Just like the SL2 is brighter than the EG3/4 stock.

The X mod tightens the module up and brings out/accents the upper and lower mids more. There is a top end clarity but it is by no means trebly. A/B'd next to my regular EG3/4, it is rounder in the midrange and tighter on the bottom, but the top end is not overly boosted at all. I know a few guys have reduced the treble bleed cap value below 500uf to get more presence to the tone in conjunction with the X mod. I have not done that because I don't like bright distorted sounds.

Does that muddy the waters enough for ya?    :D
FWIW, I'm not very good at describing tone.....

Thank you a lot for your help!

I think, the water is more muddy now.
If you are willing to answer two more questions:

Would the EG3/4x (or the stock EG3/4) be an substitute for an SL (or SL2/SL2x), maybe a substitute for an EG5 or would it be an addition (kept in mind, that I don't have the big money to spent).

And who does the mod - could it be done by any tech or is it just Nick or Jeff, who could do it?

Best Wishes

Totally agree. I am in a one guitar band and loved the EG3/4....but even in my case, the EG3/4X sounds monsterous in the mix and yes....it can still sound smooth and thick....just has more cut now. I use a graphic EQ in the loop for leads so I still get super smooth Satriani lead tones.

I find the EG3/4X has a BIG midrange, nice and full. At rehearsal I noticed right away how huge the tone was. I also love the SL2X because it is more true to the Marshall tone than the EG3/4. I love both and there are times I want the tone a little brighter, not as low mid heavy....depends on my mood. SL2X - killer Marshall. EG3/4X - killer Bogner/Diezel type tones with plenty of Marshally flavor. ;)

SL is a different animal. HUGE plexi tones.....must have both. :)

I think you could use the EG3/4x as a substitute for the SL or SL2(x) but it wouldn't be a dead ringer. Those mods are all based on the same circuit so they are somewhat similar. I've used the EG3/4 many times as my only drive sound. Set ch A lower gain for an SL-type thing and ch B for higher gain and leads. Maybe add a OD or boost pedal to ch A for something different. But, Richdie is right, the SL is a must own if you can swing it.

EG3/4(x) is not a substitute for the EG5 though-- That is it's own beast. Totally different midrange emphasis, different gain structure and feel. You can mod the EG5 with a 1000uf cap on the tube board to take away some of the strident highs, makes the mids a little fatter and that gets it a little closer to the 3/4.

Nick does the X mod, so does Jeff @ Egnater. My 3/4X was done by Nick. Cap mod is a 5 minute job you can do yourself.

Also, keep in mind that the speakers and cabs you'll be using will have a big impact on the overall tone. Some speakers/cabs cut thru a dense mix nicely, other's don't.

Let me know if I can make your decision any harder   :D

I am confused on the EGX and SL2X as well .it would be really cool if someone could do a quick clip if they own both ,doing a Rock you like a hurricance type riff .it would be cool to hear the difference just dry no effects and simple chording with the gain up.
Does the Sl2x remind anyone of a Splawn type voicing??

Muudrock, you made my decision hard enough. I play an SL and an SL2x and like the really (the SL2x has a little fizz in the end though) and also have a EG5, which I think sounds similar to the SL2x on lower gain settings. I play an Diezel Einstein as well, but sometimes have problems to cut through when playing leads with it in the band (two guitar-players). For me it is very important, that it sounds good in the context with the band and won't get lost.
I doubt that the stock EG3/4 will do it for me, but was thinking about the EG3/4x as an addition to the SL and SL2x. Maybe it is just a matter of gas and I should stick to the SL and SL2x, if the EG3/4x isn't too different. I could save the money and get a VX module instead and maybe do a cap-mod to the EG5.

Thanks a lot for your help and thanks to all of you guys!

I just played the EG3/4x tonight for the first time cranked up with a band. It sits perfectly in the mix. This is a 2 guitar band and the other guitarist was playing a Super Reverb and 2 OCD's together for more gain.

Eddie, I know what you mean about the SL2X and the fizz on the end. I actually think the SL2 in stock form is killer and much different from the EG3/4X......that is why I put the SL2 back to stock. Because the SL2 does not have a fat a midrange as thew EG3/4 I find it works better stock. Well, it has the bass tight mod, but not the high mid cap mod any longer. The EG3/4X sounds huge and does not sound fizzy anywhere at all to me - Does Marshall to Bogner to Diezel-ish. Sits perfectly.

Thanks richedie,

are you talking about the EG3/4 or the EG3/4x?

Best

I edited my post above. ;)

You know, I played the SL2X again last night and was not hearing the fizz. Could it be your speakers? It just sounds closer to a Marshall than the EG3/4X.....and tighter than the EG3/4X.

The thing I love so much about the SL2 or SL2X is how much Channel A sounds like a JCM 800. I can't get that out of the EG3/4 as easily.
