I have had many boost pedals over the years and finally picked up an SD-1. The hype is real. Instant gratification. I now wonder how many amps I would have kept had I boosted them with an SD-1. Lots of $$ down the drain. No boost Karen here!!

Yeah man, I just got my first SD-1 and instant gratification is a good way to put it

I got one years ago off Craigslist and it wasn’t very good, I sold it after a couple weeks. But I’ve never heard a bad word about it, makes me think the one I got was screwed up in some way.

What do you all think about the SMT/Malaysia Boss pedals vs made in Taiwan?

I have '82 SD-1 and they sound nothing like newer ones, even Waza version. Never understand the hype and they always sounded thin and harsh. I prefered green screamers but this particular one returned to me after 15 years and now I have to change my mind :) But ymmv.

Honestly, don't really care for em.

Other people make them sound good though.

And I really like the od1 od2 etc old ones

I have an old one and a 40th anniversary.

To me they sound a bit different.

I was a long time hold out. Why would I want an amp that needed a boost pedal to sound good? As it turns out, the boost just makes them BETTER. I've used an SD-1 for years now, and I have 3 of the damn things. An original Japanese one from '83, a Taiwanese one, and I just recently got one of the 50th Anniversary models. However, the SD-1 isn't the be all, end all (obviously) different boosts work for different amps. I use a TS-9 with my Rivera, because it just has something that works better with that amp. I also just picked up a Nobels ODR-1. It's nice to have a few different condiments to choose from.

Notice any differences?

Now you can try a Maxon OD808, works really well if the SD-1 is too aggressive.

Notice any differences?
Nope.

They all pretty much sound identical with slight adjustments to the tone control. Component tolerances will account for that. I haven't cracked the 50th Anniversary model open, but I'm sure it's surface mount components just like the regular current "made in Indonesia" models. I tend to use the old Japanese one the most, simply because I've had it the longest and it's kinda beat-up.
