I think my new VHT Fat Bottom cab sucks

A year for speaker break in?

That seems kind of extensive.

I've played my V30s for 3 months and they are nicely broken in, or they seem like they are to me.
I can't speak for George, but I'd guess he was exaggerating to make a point. Eminence and P50s take much longer to break in IMO.

I couldn't stand the 412 Fatbottom cab I used to own. The P-50 speakers are insanely bright and ear piercing with every amp I tried it with and I owned the cab for about 6 months. Get rid of those piece of shit speakers and it might sound better. ;)

That's strange, I don't find them bright. To me they are just really thin and "hollow". However, I don't know if it is the speakers or the cab itself that I don't like. I've decided just to keep it and pound on it for awhile. I can always get new speakers for it.

Thin and hollow is exactly how I hear the P50s as well. In person and in every clip I've ever heard.

Though as Gainfreak said, they work well with the VHT amps. Just nothing else IMO.

It was expensive but I've got Heritage G1265s in my 4x12 fatbottom and it sounds glorious !!! Very fat, smooth yet super crunchy and aggressive all at once

I had one VHT 4x12 loaded with P50s and 2 1x12.
I currently have a 4x12 with V30s.
The pronounced mids of the V30 make them easier to record.
The P50 sounds very well if you're playing alone. It's a well balanced and modern sounding speaker but a bit stiff.

It easily took about 6 months to break in my VHT 2-12 and that was with alot of gigging out. For someone that doesn't play very loud, it will take longer. I've had some H30's in a 2-12 for about 6 months now with quite a few gigs on them (not as many as my 4-12's) and they still aren't broken in yet. They seem to take awhile for some reason.

Really don't want to hijack this thread, but.....
What is the "proper" way to break in speakers? I have a 2x12 cab that I use for lower volume gigs, it seems as if these speakers will never get broken in.....so if I want to go into the practice room and break them in, what do I do? And how will I know it's enough?

You guys can take this for what it's worth but when I went to NAMM I was told by 2 high level representatives who work for celestion that speakers break in very easily after moderate useage at moderate volumes.(enough to get the speaker cone moving) It has been explained to me that the whole speaker break in process can literally occur in hours and that there is a lot of hype or misinformation regarding speaker break in.

just passing this along so don't shoot the messenger!

Its not the cab, its the speakers. You will either dig them or not. SteveVHT has many VHT cabs and to be honest with you they sound great with the VHT amps and like ass with most other amplifiers IMHO. Id be willing to bet if you yanked the speakers and put in something else that you like, you will be home free.

all the best

~R~

You are correct sir  I just tried every speaker that I have in the cab. The Veteran 30's make the cab sound great. There will a pair of P50-E's on the SPAM now.

:rawk:

ive never really heard any talk of speaker break in anywhere but on these boards. ive had plenty of new cabs before and if there was a change in tone after the "break in period", i didnt notice it.

I don't know if this is the right way or not, but the first thing I do when I get a new cab or speaker is hook it up to my ipod and a poweramp and lock it in my studio and let it run loud for a day.

Even speakers that are meant to sound like speakers that are broken in require breaking in so you get a broken in sounding speaker that requires breaking in. IMO, all bullshit.

Well they could break in the speaker before they ship it but I dont know if anyone does that besides scumback(I think).

Scumback even says you need to break-in their broken in sounding speakers.

Yeah i thought i heard the owner say he would do it for you for a small fee but I could be wrong on that.

Breaking in speakers is talked about all the time on the gear page. It does play a factor in my experience, but generally if I don't like a speaker at all brand new, I don't like it broken in. If I like a speaker new, than I will typically like it better once it has broken in....

My experience with VHT cabs is different... I bought one Deliverance 4x12" cab brand new (thanks George!) and another one slightly used. I don't believe either cab had speakers that were "broken in" by playing hours and hours at loud volumes. To be honest with you, I don't think the VHT speakers need to be broken in. They sounded great right from the beginning and didn't seem to have that treble "buzz" you can normally hear in brand new Celestions.
Yeah Chris I don't think the D cabs require near as much break in time. My FB 212 took quite awhile to loosen up. Same with the FB412, though i didnt like the FB412 myself. The D412 and 212s are killer!

thanks again Chris!! :)

Mine will probably be up for sale. I spent a few more days with the Fatbottom cab. Its definately the P50 speakers I don't like. When loaded up with the Veteran 30's..........it sounds clearer and tighter than any of my 4 cabs. Whats also strange is that when you take out the P50's, it isn't as beamy and directional. Now this I don't understand at all

are the p50's 16 ohm?

Yep. You looking for some ???

I would like to give them a try, but I need 8 ohm's :(

No problem. I have a bunch of other 8 ohmers I'm trying to get rid of if you are interested:

British Leads
Veteran 30's
Budda Phat 12

I know you don't like Vintage 30's (and I don't either)........but you may want to check out the Veteran 30's. They are now my faves. The British Leads are too clean and transparent for me.

I like Veteran 30's, I have a pair. I have a Celestion v30 to get rid of but I dont want to ship it. Been trying to swap it locally for 2 weeks now.

Would you take a vintage 30 for a pair of 8ohm British leads :D?
