I'm leaving TGP soon....

I tried to join the other place last week. Acceptance requires mod approval. I didn't get any emails from them for a few days so I went back to the site and tried to log in for the hell of it. No go. Then I started looking at threads. New thread there by that Ritchie loon saying the only way in now is by invitation only. That site really ain't gonna grow now.
They act like people are lined up, tripping over themselves to get in. The membership list proves that is a fantasy.

I have heard that the “management” over there is less than responsive unless they know you.

Someone here had set up an account several years ago and abandoned it. Someone started posting from the account. I know for a fact with 100% certainty that the original owner of the account was not using the account. I did a “dye” test and he passed with flying colors.

There is another way I know this to be true. I even know who was using the account and have saved the evidence just in case I need it. But I am not going there unless pushed. Not gonna snitch.

But the question becomes “How did someone take over the account?”. I am sure some would say “Well a hacker took over the account”. To that I say bullshit. This image of hackers cracking passwords is a trope in modern times. Modern software doesn’t let you try to log in over and over. That includes the forum software being used by that site. Now days it is done via social engineering most of the time. Site compromise is also a common source of credential theft. State sponsored actors have the tools for network interception.

Since the account owner was not using the account, there are only two ways that account got hijacked: a site compromise or someone with serious administrative credentials reset the password and took over the “abandoned” account. There is no mention of any site compromise that I have seen on that forum so logic would indicate it is the latter scenario.

Rigtalk.net was doomed from the bginning imo. You don’t acheive a network effect (which is what forums and social media are reliant upon) by chasing people away and creating barriers, which is precisely what they have done over there.

Exclusivity only works if you can get people to pay a premium plus a serious luxury “fee” for a good or service. Rt.net has no such pull.

I can put in a word for you with the admin, if you like.

He's a good friend of mine.

You can get an account over there and air your grievances directly with the site owner.

To what end? I don’t need to tilt at some asshat.

And who said the owner had anything to do with the account theft?

I'm drinking coffee and eating Twinkies® right now.

:coffee:
Did you just make a Walmart run?

I'm laying off twinkies... I gotta drop some weight. Taco Tuesday and Beer 30 have taken advantage of me.

Wow... that site seems dead. I bet and admin hijacked the account to make it seem like there were more members.
