Might have been more appropriate to use a picture of Dickinson from his prime. Either that or use that more recent picture of Di'Anno where he's fat, bald and in a wheelchair.
I was just trying to be a jerk. How'd I do? LOL

I do like the Dickinson era stuff but the best stuff he turned out is closer to the Di'Anno era. The band sounded like a Di'Anno band with a different singer. He's the equivalent to Brian Johnson. Decent, but not Bon Scott.

Well, like most bands the longer they went on the less I liked them, but I really don't care at all for the Di'Anno stuff. On the other hand I totally agree about AC/DC. After FTATR their new material sucked. Everything they did with Bon Scott was far superior. If my memory serves me they had all of Back in Black and some of FTATR already mostly written when Bon Scott died.

Saw the tour here in San Francisco

I saw this tour as well! I recall Bruce was buried in the mix. He commented later that you cannot re string vocal chords. too many dates can max out vocals, particularly power singers like Bruce. Dio was prone to blowing out his chords too. Killer album though!

It's a decent album until you listen to the Di'Anno era stuff then you realize how lame Maiden became once they brought in Dickinson. Yuck. You went from street level material to some wannabe opera singer prancing around the stage in masks and spandex.
Ya nah,
Ya the riffs were killer but Di' Anno was a punk growler and could not sing at all. In fact as a die hard fan he sucked in comparison. Bruce is wow factor goose bumps good
Beast and Piece of mind are Maidens top shelf no comparison albums. Yes Phantom of the opera was more progressive but as songs Trooper, Hallowed and similar were massive and listenable to this day! :m17:

Those later album are ok but are pretty pathetic once you hear Killers or the self titled. When fear of the dark came out I never listened to another Maiden album again.

It's two different sounds. Those first two albums are so badass. Like technical punk albums, punk that had evolved to something that I could get behind. But the Bruce years are amazing too. Right up to 7th Son I'd say. No Prayer is a HUGE slip. Not terrible but bad production and lack luster. Fear of the Dark has it's moments. After that, the allure is less and less. But for me Powerslave is awesome and the tour that followed is legendary. I have to say though, Somewhere in time is pretty damn cool as well. Everyone is playing at a high level.

I’m surprised no one mentioned “No Prayer for the Dying”. To me, it has the raw energy of early Maiden, and Dickinson’s killer vocals.

Then again, a lot of stuff I like is generally not liked on the forums.

Listen to songs like Public Enema No. 1, Hooks in You, Bring Your Daughter to the Slaughter and the title track if you don’t have time.

I hated the production on that but you can hear some of the hooks in the writing that Bruce would later take to Tattoo'd millionaire. That sound as well. Probably recorded in that same studio. Tailgunner I always thought was badass at least.

They hired him so he must've sang acceptably well.

He's a good singer, of course. I just don't like his operatic approach. Plus I had transcription books with pics of the dude with his chest hair combed. He's kind of effeminate while Di'Anno looked like someone who would kick the shit out of you in a dirty alleyway. And then you confirm what I was saying earlier about how the best Dickinson stuff is basically the stuff that came out in the years directly proceeding him replacing Di'Anno. Everything after Di'Anno was a slow slip, album to album, with each less quality than the last.

I never got a punk vibe. I got a cutting edge metal with an intimidating street thug fronting the band whose vocal tone reflected exactly the tone and timbre of those first two albums Some of the Bruce stuff is good. Piece of Mind, Number of the Beast, Powerslave. I think he pushed them harder in the whole medieval fantasy/war novel shit. It was cool when I was 12 but didn't age well for me. I usually prefer raw over polished music for the most part and Di'Anno is more raw.

Bro get out of this thread 🤦‍♂️
I've previously warned a couple members about getting active with me on the whole Di'Anno/Dickinson debate so here we are. Di'Anno projected power. Dickinson projected the madrigal dinner vibe. The choice is clear and it is not he dude doing comb overs with his chest hair.

Youre just an ancient dork bro 🥱

The part that kicks in at 2m08s, holy shit! Imagine that groove, but drummed by Clive Burr! 🤘

Clive to me is like Les Binks in Priest; their best and most groovy. Nicko is great and a nice character, but he misses that je ne sais quoi that Clive brought to the table. I've played in various Maiden tributes (guess who, see attachment 😎 ) and we did some shows for Clive's MS fundraiser as well around 2011, 2012. R.I.P. 😢

And totally agree with the rest you said earlier. Somewhere In Time gets flack it doesn't deserve, just because the guitar sounds more chorussy/fx-drenched (Gallien Kruger ML250 anyone?) and some synth stuff is used. Songs like Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner, Alexander The Great rank among Maiden's best.

I have all the albums up to 'Fear' on vinyl, but NPFTD I didn't even bother buying the CD later on.
Oh, and Total Eclipse should've totally been on Number of the Beast. Just sayin'.
