Is a Recessed Floyd on a Charvel a good idea?

Are recessed routed floyds better or worse for a charvel style guitar?

Are you talking about modding one to be recessed?

Lots of work but done right is worth it, played one done correctly and it was the shit.

I have thought about doing this to my San Dimas. I'm just afraid it wont be done right or cost too F'ing much. I think you have to do the neck pocket (not sure if you need to retain the angle) along with the Floyd recess.

Get in touch with Harry aka Hgainiac, he brought one to the fest you could not make and the action was retarded.

You are right, the pocket has to be reworked.

I wouldn't buy another if it wasn't recessed. Too spoiled with the Anderson setup. Flush mounted is too much in the way for me. I guess it is what you are used to playing.

If I am remembering correctly you should be spoiled by IBANEZ's setup, more specific STEVE VAI'S setup as the JEM was the first production recessed floyd.

Oh is Curt going to flip with this thread....................

Tom is the god father of the superstrat though.

Assuming we are talking about a promod Charvel, the neck pocket angle is set at teh factory for a non-recessed floating trem. I reduce the angle to allow the trem to sit flush against the body (as God intended for Charvel :D)

Should you want to go recessed, you will have to tweak the pocket and (of course) the body.

If that's what you want just do it.

I prefer non recessed myself but I don't pull up on the bar much...

My $.02. I love guitars with Floyds (only- I hate stop tailpieces and Kahlers), and I personally can't get along with recessed Floyds. They don't give me my pivot point for anchoring my hand. It seems to interfere with picking.

They can certainly be ordered that way from the Custom Shop, I wouldn't go wasting good money doing it to a Pro Mod though. I wouldn't do it to an old one either... though I did do a nice hack job on my 83 Charvel once I heard the Attitude Song way back when :scared:

How is Tom Anderson the godfather of the super strat? I've seen you write that a couple of times and  each time.

I think a recessed Floyd is a very Jackson/ESP/Ibanez thing to do. You can certainly do it to a Charvel or a Gibson or an Oldsmobile if you must. Especially if you need to pull up 17 steps. My custom shop Charvel I'm playing right now will go up 2 and 1/2 steps with no recess.

And I freaking love when I read on Rig Talk, "I can only use this or I could never use that" and it just makes me giggle myself silly at the implication, in this case that what worked for Van Halen, Lynch, Gary Moore, DeMartini and others is just not quite good enough for one of us schlubs.

psycodave write: not sure if you need to retain the angle
so my stupid question is: Is it possibile give an angle to the neck in the area of neck junction using the 4 screw??

I know someone who does gorgeous routing work for anyone who wants to say goodbye to some sub-floyd wood :)

You certainly can. It's a good deal of work. Not sure it's worth it.
IMO, non-recessed floyds with floyd resting on the body sounds better than most other trem systems. Add an upgraded brass block and they resonate like crazy. So unless pulling up on the bar is an integral part of what you do, I'd leave that guitar as is.

I'd snag a mahogany body from USACG or Musikraft with the recessed rout and a 2 1/4" neck pocket to fit the neck, slap an oil finish on it, put all your parts on, and stash the Charvel body in a closet for safe keeping.

No such thing as "better or worse" for everybody...it's whatever you prefer. I like a recessed Floyd as it keeps my hand in a more familiar position in regard to the body having played vintage trem and Kahlered guitars extensively prior to getting my first Floyded Charvel. That said, it didn't take long to get used to a top mounted Floyd. As Curt mentioned, raising pitch is no issue unless you flat mount the Floyd against the guitar's surface ala EVH.

As for Charvel purists, most of them are screw counting nut jobs who place form over function. I wouldn't take any advice from them unless its in regard to collecting and eliciting "ohhhs and ahhhs" on forums..."which would you choose...?"
