Is a used Marshall 412 1960 lead cab worth getting?

I have a mid 80's Marshall cab. No MDF or press board. Hey they were good enough for Judas Priest,Iron Maiden, Metallica and countless other bands, they are good enough for me. You can't argue the fact that they were the industry standard
for a long time.

If you can't get a good sound out any cabinet, you suck...period. You might be able to get a subjectively better or worse sound out of a better cab, or a subjectively better or worse sound out of one that will cost a whole lot more. Its all subjective.

fixed.

with that being said, i wouldnt pay anything more than $300 for the new shit they are trying to sell. as someone else said save 300 more and spend the money more wisely on a cabinet that can deliver the goods without build quality tolerance issues or made in china.

If that makes you feel better. :jerkit:

My point exactly...as well as countless other bands, not to mention millions of unsigned garage, bar, and bands everywhere else. Marshall cabs are found EVERYWHERE. Even if they aren't your favorite, mine included, you have to admit that they have been responsible for good tone for decades. I personally use Rivera, but have used the very same cabs in question with good results, and could do so without any problem at any time if need be. For $150..it would be a no brainer.

If! all your buddy's on your favorite guitar forums don't go "oooooh and ahhhhh!!" when you post your "NCD" (new cab day) post...It can't possibly sound any good.. :D

Amen, I'm glad someone else around here knows how to judge tone

Yep, sorry but if you can't get a good (not saying THE BEST EVER, but good) tone out of a standard marshall cab I agree that you suck. Period. Not my first choice either, I prefer my bogner cab. But I've used Marshall cabs plenty of times as backline and at rehearsals etc. and they're fine, especially where it counts, in a mix. I really think the majority of problems come from people judging gear on it's own at home when it's designed to work in a mix. What sounds perfect in a mix is often not as pleasing to people playing on their own.

Cabs are genre specific IMO. If you play anything "classic" then it's hard to beat a Marshall cab......especially loaded with greenbacks. The 1960 cabs have a slightly loose, bitey sound to them that just screams rock n roll. But I have seen some shoddy work on the inside of some more recent ones. I have 2 old JCM800 cabs and a Mojo clone and they all behave a bit differently with same speakers......the Mojo being the fullest sounding, but also slightly more scooped sounding at the same time......if that makes sense. I've been through a ton of high end cabs and will now use nothing else than a Marshall variant. Then again, if you play modern, then there are many cabs that are deeper sounding and more articulate at high volumes.

Just my 2 cents.

Yeah, it's all about what's better for your use...not what's better overall.
Marshall cabs have this nice flex to their sound. Mesa on the other hand have that solidity to their sound.
I like both but ended up selling both my Marshalls.

The best part is that most of the cabs that a lot of people will prefer are based on Marshall cabs. I mean, I am with you if I had my choice, I would pick another, but I would have zero problem using one. Hell, I had one in college back in the 90s..and loved it. Then again...pretty much everyone had one. Tons of rockstars toured with them. Then again, that was the same time JCM 900s were en vogue and we know how those are slammed here...lol.

Are we talking about the same cab that has been used by countless bands for a long ass time, or a new piece a crap that I don't know about? If it is the former, then this forum as really gone insane. You don't need a vintage Marshall cab for it to be ok. You don't need a boutique cab for it to count. Seriously, what the hell is wrong with some of you people? lol IDK where you guys live but since he didn't mention an empty cab, you can't get any cab around here for $150 let alone a Marshall....forget a vintage one. Shit, an avatar would empty would cost you more. Stop cork sniffing. Last time I saw RATM, Tom Morello used ONE Marshall 50w head and, you better sit down for this....one PEAVEY cab....and no not a good one. He just took off the name plate. He still sounded awesome.

This....

LOL!!! Exactly... Its not even worth responding to D

I have some old vintage Marshall checkerboards from the 70's that are killer, but there is NOTHING wrong with the reissue checkerboards with the greenbacks in them. Warren and Aldrich use them . Also the basketweave Hendrix ones they reissue with the "100" on them are outstanding sounding. the Vintage Modern Cabs sound great too...Uli Jon Roth plays them and they are roaring.

Mojo makes really great cabs that i think are one of the best ive heard.

Marshall cabs have been made the same way since the early 70s - birch ply, with a particleboard back. They are still made in England today.

Celestion speakers switched most of their production to China years ago, but Bogner and Suhr and plenty others have no problem using Chinese Celestions either.

If you like the sound of it, you like the sound of it.
