I still contend that the most well constructed classic solo in the history of electric guitar is "Stairway to Heaven"...simply perfection within the context of that song. "Hotel California", "Comfortably Numb", "Mr Crowley", and "Sultans of Swing" all get an honorable mention for me.

Phil is a monster...one of the best players that I've ever seen. Unfortunately, his strong Christian background has kept him off of the radar for most players. I'm lucky that I've become friends with him through some mutual friends...he's a super cool guy beyond his enormous talent.BackCrack":2kxjcj1f said:Is Eruption the best solo evar?
No...any solo Phil Keaggy plays is better than Eruption.

If the answer is yes, I'd say "Eruption" and "Spanish Fly" would be 1 and 2 on my list...
If you are including solos in the context of actual songs (either vocal or instrumental), then there are many I love more, some of which have been mentioned.
I don't think you can compare the two though myself. How do you compare "Eruption" to the solo in "Stairway to Heaven". That solo is perfect in the context of the build up of that song. Take it out of that context as just the solo with nothing behind it and no way it would have the same effect... A solo guitar piece and a solo in the context of a full song are different things to me...

My thoughts exactly.
