Anyone have experience with these? I am basically looking for alternatives to getting good recording sounds without killing the neighbors. I work fulltime so recording during the day is out of the question, and I also live in a townhouse. Can I basically just plug my Mark IV directly into this without blowing the speakers? Are there any limits to doing it this way?

I like mine better...

It sounds like utter shit with the lid closed. I had the best luck w/ it open and creating a tent out of packing blankets. I imagine steve's setup sounds far better.
If you want really great sounds w/o killing the neighbors in a townhouse/apartment/etc. there is a better solution. Take your amp, plug it into a hot plate set as a load. Take the line out from your hotplate and do one of two things: 1. Reamp the line out through a powered mixer or a power amp w/ some form of eq functionality. I do this all of the time and it absolutely smokes for micing a cab at tv volumes. 2. Take the line out directly into your recording device. Get a copy of Voxengo's Pristine Space deconvolution plugin. Go over to the Sneap Forum and get GuitarHack's impulse files (if they aren`t up, PM me I have them) and grab Keiffer's (from here and HC) impulse files. Mix to taste and enjoy the easiest recording you have ever done that sounds straight up fantastic.

Your other option is to get a modeler, which sucks far more than the options above. Both of those options will stomp all over that Randall Iso cab and you will be far happier w/ the results. And yes, I completely acoustically treated the Randall...It still sucked balls

Never tried the Randall but have 2 Demeter iso cabs I have used for damn near everything I recorded the last 4 years...

I have been curious by the demeter cabs, but after my experience w/ the Randall I shy away from it. Plus, the hotplate setup I described above has been simply awesome to me so I haven`t really found myself in search of any other apartment friendly solutions

boogex is free, not as many options as pristine space but it is free. Imo no reason to use pristine space unless you want to make you're own impulses.

also, great suggestions. Im a big fan of impulse files after trying them out a few months back.

I don`t have any online at the moment (and am in my office at work right now, they are all on my home computer) but here is a clip from MoodBender using his Dorado and an impulse file:

I know there are some more out there, I just can`t recall at the moment and am too tired :aww:
If that doesn`t work go here and about 3/4 of the page down:

Nice! I plan on building something like that once I downsize from a 412 to a 212. Where'd you buy the foam?

Wow that looks awesome, how much does it cost to make one like that?

I'm sure you could make one cheaper, but I had mine made for $800 shipped to my door by http://vocalbooth.com. The cool thing is how it comes apart with velcro. it made it really easy to assemble it in that tiny room. If it had been screwed together, I don't know if I could have built it in that closet...

Here's my Homebrew version of that...I NEED to get some interior pics done of it, Hell I need to put some sort of covering on it too, but fuck it, it works great. :D

What exactly are impulse files ?

What exactly are impulse files ?

It is the recorded impulse response of a particular space (or in this case, a cabinet w/ V30s and miced by an Sm57) to a burst of white noise. A deconvolution plugin is then used to read that file (the recorded impulse file) and apply the sonic signature to whatever sound you have recorded. It was originally intended to be used for super high quality reverbs of particular places, and then people discovered its a damn fine way to model things other than just space.

Mine was built custom by vocalbooth.com. Here is what I wrote about the thing. I sent this to them and they posted it on their site. They didn't change a word:

That's awesome - I seriously thought about one of those for a 2x12. You run yours in a closet - if you didn't play cranked would it still be as quiet without being in a closet?

My amp only got the tone I wanted cranked and it is 120 watts, so I need the closet. If you play at a lower volume you would not need to run it in a closet like I do...
