Why are these amps so cheap? I've been reading that they're fairly easy to mod. How's the quality of them in stock form?

I realize these examples are modded, but they sound pretty good to me.

Ypu. Cheap parts and made in China. That doesn't mean they're bad, but they were designed with low cost in mind.

I had a modded 20H (I think) several years ago. While it sounded really good, I grew tired of it quickly and offed it.

I'm actually selling the JCA50H Tonight that I bought last week for twice what I paid for it. Otherwise, It's a killer little amp for the $200 I paid for it. I could see myself using it, or getting another in the future.

I had the Martin Kidd modded JCA Custom 22. It was insane with gain. Doug actually upgraded the caps, and all sorts of other upgraded components before he shipped it. For no reason, other than being the nice guy Doug is.. Sounded pretty good, was plenty loud too. Screaming lead tones. But, it succumbed to the EL84 OCD I have.

Have you considered the SC20H? I know I made the Mini Jube suggestion that I thought would work well for you, (that didn't). Maybe you need those bigger bottles, yet portable. Sell the Runt, throw in some cash, and maybe a 3534, or the Carvin Legacy III would do it.

Or, get a cheap, used Jet City, and send it to one of our resident experts and upgrade and mod the shit out of it. They DO have potential, but you're still stuck with EL84's.

I got a modded JCA22H today from Reverb. It has a Jose sat switch, mid boost switch, and the depth mod. Now to just find a decent 1x12 that pairs well with it.

What speakers pair well with the 22H? I'd most likely go with a 1x12.
