If you don't need 50 or 100 watts get a DSL20 Lambchopper can get just about any classic thrash tone with this and a couple pedals. I have a friend that plays in a punk band and uses it for gigs.

Nothing wrong with Ceriatone's iron. I prefer to spec my own when doing a build, though. Gives you more control over PT secondary voltage and thus B+ and plate voltage. And I prefer to spec my own OT so I can dictate what primaries are. Merren, Classic Tone, Marstran, Heyboer... all good.

I like Ceriatone for their kits. You can get any of their amps super cheap and build it yourself. Great learning experience and you can voice the amp exactly how you want it. With all the hot-rodded clones they offer, there's really no reason to get anything else unless you don't want to learn all the electronics stuff and can't put a square peg into a square hole.

That said, some of their amps have mistakes in them. So you need to know what you're doing and not just blindly follow their layouts. But once you learn how this stuff works, you'll really never amp hunt again because if an amp you have is too loose or too bright or not enough gain or you want more mid emphasis higher up, or whatever... instead of flipping an amp, you'll know you can just change one resistor to get the exact sound in your head

Which Ceriatone kit would you recommend for a newb builder who has built a few pedals? I can put a square peg in a square hole, but I've never built an amp.

Look at the JCM51 if you have Facebook. He posted the layout in the Ceriatone user group. It's has a Lotta functionality but is still a classic marshall type amp.

Depends what sound/options you're looking for. But it's hard to beat a JTM45, Superlead, or JCM800. If you want the modded Marshall thing, then really any of them will get the job done. Again, depends on the features you want.

That's what I initially thought, and I have no doubt these can achieve killer tones regardless. I'm just starting to wonder if they might miss a distinct marshall 2203 quality I'm looking for which I wish I could articulate better — a percussive, resonant "chunk" with a certain harmonics in the midrange with palm mutes and of course that bite and growl. I dunno, maybe it'd be worth it to build a kit anyways for the experience and as its cost so much less!

If you're building one yourself, you can absolutely get it to sound however you want as long as you take the time to learn how to do it. You don't have to build it to whatever spec/layout Ceriatone shows. You can alter the circuit however you want.

Hi y'all. Although I've been aware of the JCM 800 clones for a while, I've only recently started considering getting one. Specifically I'm looking at the Ceriatone line. Do these really replicate the Marshalls — not just the tone but the volume and response? Can anyone share recommendations, experience and caveats? While pedals and possibly mods will be implemented, I'm ultimately going for a more classic thrashy/chunky tone, not too saturated. I would say close to Exodus Tempo tone if I had to pick. Comments appreciated, thanks. Also, I play B/C# standard.

Update: Ended up with a ceriatone 2203. I really like it so far, but interested in modding it, at the very least adding a depth/resonance control. Can anyone suggest any resources on that? I understand it's pretty easy, even for a novice.

Cap value is a matter of taste. Try anything from 2200pF to 4700pF.

As far as other mods, have a look at all the other Ceriatone clones for ideas. You can utilize anything from the Chupa, Yeti, Gargoyle, Molecular, etc. They'are all 2203/04s with various tweaks.

Awesome, I didn't think it was that complicated, I'll try it.
