I think its just the nature of things ya know. I mean how many marshals and other good sounding stock amps Dave has modded, and his name is synonomous with good mods and amps, so its a win win for both companies imo.

I would be really curious to hear a before and after. I just wished the 20 watt head already came with an efx loop. If it did, that would be a no brainer, but its kinda pricey for a single channel amp to add an efx loop

I agree

Yeah, I know, but since Jet City is a newer company, smaller, they probably are just looking to reach as wide of a market, and it seems as if they are pretty keen to what players want ya know. A company like marshal, who's been around for as long as they are, and a rep like they have would never admit that they should have their amps changed from the getco. I think its cool that they hooked up with Dave, and while I am sure it sounds better, I think the slant is that Dave isn't really trying to make it sound as is, only improved, but offering his popular brown eye mod, taking the amp in a slightly different direction ya know. Plus the ability to add an efx loop and whatever else that the specifically chose to not include just makes it more appealing. thats my take on it. I don't think they are bowing to the ideal that it doesn't sound good already, but just offering a different direction to chose. Plus its really just a tone merchants thing as far as I know, so its not like you can go to guitar center and buy the DF versions, its a specific location that caters to high end players perhaps

I find it interesting that a company is offering mods from a different builder. Seems like they are admitting that their own design isn't good enough and need to offer mods to make them sound better. Thing is... I am sure Dave's mods ARE better... ;)

no offense, but that's bullshit
completely different voicings

that's obviously a limited partnership
selling modded amps straight from china would require a lot more bureaucracy, a much larger quantity, and wouldn't even make sense if that wasn't a new model (with a huge investment on marketing)
not to mention that a 100% chinese modded wouldn't never sell for that price, even if it was better than Dave's mods
Mike Soldano modded Jet Cities wouldn't make sense as well, since he's been using the same circuitry in every amp for like 25 years

Its cool that you have this choice I guess, cheap platform to get something you are looking for.

Different voicing? so Dave removes the entire tone stack and then mods that?

I hope Dave gets someone to post some decent clips of what it sounds like. I have yet to play a Jet city amp, and have heard both good and bad clips, so it would be great to get side by side, cha know.?..!

probably not
soldano eq is just slightly different than a marshall eq (higher slope resistance, so it's a bit more scooped)
but the gain stages are definitely different, and maybe the coupling capacitors and bright caps
probably mostly about boosting the upper mids and cutting some bass from the gain circuit
the JC20H is a very simple amp, so there isn't much to mess with
some say the saturation switch is a diode clipped jose master, but only dave could confirm that
I think his mods would be much greater for the 50w and 100w versions (IF you wanted a british voicing instead of Mike Soldano's signature tone)
a JC50H with the HBE and EL34's for under $1000 would be killer

Brilliant idea in my opinion. It is no different than if my buddy Rob Keeley had modded pedals sold by BOSS. The company is really in a win-win situation. They have people buying the amps and people buying the modded amps. The situation with Dave obviously has moved more product.

Thanks for the support here, gents. We are young, and small, so I figured we can try something like this and see how it goes.

There should be a review from Premier Guitar coming soon, plus we will try to do some A/B comparisons internally - might take a short while.

Anyway, please let me know if you have other ideas like this which can set JCA apart from the common amp company... doug@jetcityamplification.com

The Jet City guys are doing things right. If you want to succeed in todays marketplace, you've got to know your client base and cater to them. All they're doing is listening to what everyone is asking for and trying to find ways to make it happen, take out the middle man (or actually involve them as the case may be) and make it easier for the consumer to get what they're looking for.

I can't think of any other amp company, or any other company for that matter, taking those extra steps. It's win/win for everyone here.

Just wished the 20 came with a loop already, but alas, just wishing.

I wished the amp would come with a factory loop as well... 200 dollars for a loop in an amp of this price is outrageuos... Its like you are paying more than 40% of the price of the new amp on an fx loop!!!

Anyway I really like the idea of Dave modding these amps, I hope he does the higher wattage heads as well, that I would buy...

Only one dislike is the design of these amps, with the blue and black tolex, they don't look that good, just a detail though...

It looks like they offer alternate baffles on their site:

AFAIK Mike S. follows the philosphy that lower wattage amps should not go beyond a certain gain level b/c power amp distortion is added to the preamp gain when cranked a bit (thats why the Atomic on which the 20H is based has just three gainstages instead of the typical 4 of "the SLO sound") - but since some guys want a low wattage AND low volume high gain amps, other people (Friedman in this case) provided their "ideas" to JC.

Cool thing IMO and not a "vs" thing but an "optional" thing .

I think its pretty cool. You don't have to buy one, and pay shipping to Dave to get it modded (if you want that), and then wait to get the mod done.

Both Soldano and Friedman kick ass! IMO you can't compare what Jet City is doing to Marshall or any other company of that status. Of course Marshall would not release a modded amp that sounds good! They haven't released anything worthwhile in years!!!  ( ;) ) and they don't need to improve their products because people still buy the Marshall name. (Take the new afd slash amp for example. )

Jet City is obviously a different kind of company. They're trying to give players what they want for a decent price and are filling a void in the market. I agree that the cost for adding the loop is a bit high, but either way I think this collaboration is a good thing.

And I can't wait for that iso-cab!

Me neither, but it keeps getting delayed, and delayed, and delayed. MF says it's now not expected until Oct. 6th!
