Hi!

I need some preamp tubes for a Peavey 5150 script logo, A Marshall JVM410h and a couple of Marshall Vintage Modern heads. I have been researching on the internet and I am more confused now than when I started.

Are JJ ECC83 gold tubes good for preamp tubes in medium gain amps (Rock, Blues, Country, Smooth Jazz and Hard Rock)
and
Are they good for high gain amps (modern hard rock and modern metal)?

What are the differences? I have some of the JJECC83 gold coming. Do I need to get some ECC83s also? Someone told me today on the phone that the ECC83 were only good for the reverb and stuff and that the tone sucked.

What are your thoughts?

Thanks!

Don't overthink it and don't spend a ton of money. Just grab some within budget and that are available and throw them in there.

The difference is they plate the pins in gold for increased conductivity. Does it make a difference? I seriously doubt the small increase in conductivity on the pins would have any noticeable effect on tone. The rest of the damn thing is made of the exact same materials. I have heard that companies like JJ test their tubes and gold plate the ones with best characteristics. So, any perceived quality improvement would be from the tubes being the better of the tubes coming off the line. I have no idea if there is any truth to that. Just from what I know about designing circuits, I don't see how plating the leads on a few components would have any significant effect when the critical components are still made of the exact same material.

Alot of these things they do to tubes won't do anything in the audible range. I'm sure if you put it on a test bench trying to use an old IBM 650 or something, it would make a difference in data processing... but otherwise its not gonna change the voicing on your amp at all.
