Thread title not click-baity enough. Should read “John Mayer sucking Van Halen” or John Mayer fucking Van Halen”…accurate yet misleading.

You will have to leave the guitar community completely because people playing VH covers will never die . Just shows how immense his impact was 45 + years later .

if im spending the absurd amounts of money it costs to go to a concert these days its to watch that artist perform their own stuff, not cover Panama of all songs i never need to hear again or any other cover song for that matter :dunno: i hate going to concerts and not hearing this, that and the other song i was hoping and hearing some cover instead no one asked for.

i actually do like taylors older stuff quite a bit, the last few albums though i thought have taken a downturn but shes turned into literally the biggest star ever so i guess the minority.

John as ive told is from my town, i missed him in high school by a year, he was in bands with my friends older brothers and we were always riding our bikes to wherever in town they were playing that weekend. fast forward to the summer i graduated and the word in town was the old guitar player john from villanova junction was opening for i think dave mathews somewhere and was about to blow up, and that he certainly did. hes not anywhere in my top artist list but i do think his blues playing and tones are top notch, and i certainly respect the dude for what hes done. i do find the over the top hatred for him fascinating, even amongst the locals here.

It's a shame this kid at 17 plays it a hell of a lot better

and unlike John M, this kid didn't fuck up the bridge. (y)

My only small piece of criticism would be that he played the 2nd part of the solo (during spoken interlude) full gain, when you're 'supposed to' back off the volume knob a bit to bring out more of the subtleties.
Also a big plus over John M's cover was the intro. This kid plays it correctly timing-wise, John was off, relative to the drummer.

Regarding the 'back off' comment for solo I liked it the way it was because I felt the guitar was not as forward in that live mix as I would have liked and I feel if he backed off, it would have gotten drowned out. I'm not an expert in this area, but I'd think that portion of the solo is a lot easier to pull off in a studio where you have 48 sliders in front of you (or whatever). :D

I see what you mean, but I wouldn't be surprised if EVH used a treble bleed circuit for that (also in the spoken word bridge of Unchained it sounds like it), because while backing off the volume lowers the gain, it also 'raises' (or doesn't mute as much) the treble, making the guitar sound clearer.

I play Panama with my band and do the leads exactly that way. Only thing is, I typically play it on fixed bridge guitars.

Two of my buddies from high school ended up in his former dorm room at Berklee. One got there the year before and shared the room with Mayer’s former roommate, the only real ‘dirt’ that was passed along was that Mayer was OCD and never left his room, dude just stayed in there playing all the time and wasn’t really big on socializing. Had to have everything in the right place and got really pissy about anything of his being touched.

He doesn’t really move the needle for me at all, I dig the chord work/melody in that “Slow Burning” tune but that’s the most of it. Every now and then I’ll check out a tune to see if he’s written something I dig and I never hear anything that strikes a chord with me. What’s interesting is comparing him to Gilmour; you got two guys who grew up upper middle class with really voices that are more angelic than bluesy, playing blues music on guitar. One of those dudes can send a chill down my spine with one note, the other one collects watches and fucks models. :ROFLMAO:

that sounds about right, he used to work at the gas station overnights so he could play guitar all night used to be the story. these threads actually made me go and listen to his first three albums today which i actually have never even done, i did have the trio album i really liked but his actual albums i never bought cause you could hear them on the radio constantly lol. if you take them for what they are, which is "todays light rock 98.9fm" kind of shit, its great for what it is. am i ever going to listen to these albums again?? probably not lol. im surprised just how actually light they are, which almost makes it even more impressive to me he was able to kind of transcend into other stuff the way he has. this song did stand out to me as a good one

Doesn't suprise me if he does play Van Halen. He's always been totally derivative.
