Here are a couple clips of the JVM. One is with KT77 output tubes and the other clip has EL34s. Each clip contains the same riff on the exact same setting on the amp. The rhythms were each doubled tracked. The solo is the same on both and it was done with EL34s. I biased both types of tubes at 65ma per side. That seemed to be the sweet spot for both of them.

Here is the info:

EL34 used: NOS RFT/Siemens
KT77 used: JJ/Tesla

Preamp tubes: V1 and V2 are RFT, the rest are stock Marshall tubes.

Guitar: '89 Les Paul Custom
Pickup: Bareknuckles Nailbomb
Tuning: D Standard
JVM Channel: OD2 Orange (rhythm) and OD1 Red (lead)
All settings are for the rhythm tracks and are clockface
Master Volume: 12
Ch. Volume: 9
Gain: 11:15
Bass: 1:30
Middle: 11
Treble: 10
Resonance: 12
Presence: 9
Cabinet: Marshall 1960BV (Vintage 30's). 10 years old and broken in nicely.
Mic: E609
Pre: Presonus Blue Tube
DAW: Pro Tools 002

**There is absolutely no EQ on the rhythm guitars. This was done so you can actually hear the differences in output tubes.

There is a tiny bit of EQ on the lead to smooth it out just a tad and delay was added in Pro Tools.

There are no punch-ins on any tracks, all are single pass.

From HCAF.....................

Noice tight right wrist man

crap speakers but I am hearing a tad more bottom end with the 77s, maybe some more lower mids as well.

I was expecting maybe a tad more compression from the lead part as I use od1 orange most of the time but it sounded very close to the orange setting.

MAn I may have to re-tube soon, thanks for taking the time!

Who said the JVM cant get as mean as the other metal amps???? :D

Kt77's all the way for that style!! They sound much tighter and they have bounce to them !!

Very cool to hear the differences!!!

KT-77's win. I have them in my Cameron Superlead, and I found the same differences - slightly more tightly focused bottom end with a tad more low-mids - perfect for a Marshall-type amp IMO!

65ma bias - how did you come to that value? Just curious as my amp is around 37ma I think - 100w Superlead. I am missing something?

I like the EL34s. It sounds more marshall....the 77s are cool, cuz they make your JVM sound like an ENGL. They are both cool

Thanks, Scott. I agree, the JVM can just as mean no prob.

I have the gain on the OD 1 red mode at about 10:30 or so for the lead. It doesn't compress a heck of a lot on that setting but feels a little fatter to me there. :)

65ma per side so that is 32.5ma per tube.

Oh ok, cool! I am a bias noob, so just checking to make sure mine was OK!

So sitting in the room with the amp which ones do you prefer? I wonder if I am missing the "Marshally-mids" from the EL-34, and have been thinking about getting another set to do what you just did.

Sick man - you got some killer chops! I prefer the sound of the EL34's by a small margin, but I think the KT77's let you lead stand out a bit better, they both sound great. Nice job, I enjoyed that  !

Man, that is tough. I haven't decided yet. There are things I really like about both.

Thanks man! It seems like the KT77's take up less sonic space than the 34's to me. However, I like the more complex tone of the 34 as well. I dig 'em both!

Without a doubt. More clarity, less hair.

Both sounded great.

Thanks for the comparison.

Totally awesome, Bro. Tight-ass playing. JVM's rule. Is there anything they CAN'T do?

KT77 for sure. The EL34's were cool, but didn't have near the low end tightness and clarity.

That's a Marshall?! Not bad... Not bad at all. I like Marshalls, but usually associate them with '80s. This sounds quite modern. Probably the most convincing JVM-gain clip I've heard.

Both clips sounded pretty much the same, with the KT77's adding a more throaty sound to the tone.

Overall, I found the tone to be a little too hairy, and lacking mids. Honestly, it's sounds exactly like my old Valvestate 8100 head
