So i am trying to get some sounds together for guitars for this recording project with some buds. Doing some classics a little "beefed up" from KISS, Merciful Fate, Priest, Grim Reaper,,, you get the point.

I am digging this particular Slate drum kit. Are these guitars too modern sounding? I actually like this combo but will be trying a ton of different combos in the next few days. This is the Engl Blackmore panned left/right and the 5150III dead center.

Thoughts?

Don't judge the playing! Just teh toanz!

First off, excellent song choice! That whole album rocks! Second, that tone is fantastic!

Thanks man! We're going to track this AND "Don't Let Me Down" and see what comes out better. On the list are Twisted Sister, GrimReaper, Maiden, Priest, Mercyful Fate, Dio, KISS and Sabbath. I'm sure other stuff will pop up.

Want to pay respect to the original songs but give them a more pushed/modern feel. It's nice the Kemper give virtually "mix ready" guitars. I have a ton of other sounds I will make combos of before I start laying down any keeper tracks.

The sounds I will be demoing are:

• Friedman Brown Eye
• Splawn Nitro
• Diezel Einstein
• Diezel VH4
• Diezel D-Moll
• Mesa Mk IV & V
• JCM800
• Mesa Rackto & Tremoverb
• 5150 III
• Engle Blackmore
• Engle Savage

I am also going to be taking a Saturday to go to AZ and hook up with Tim Owens (NOT Ripper - LOL). He is the guy on the Kemper forum doing all the great Friedman profiles. We are going to profile the fuck out of my Quick Rod. It was super cool of him to offer.

I will be making a bunch of pairings of the sounds above to see what feels the most right for this.

Yeah that sounds really good! Not too heavy in my opinion sounds pretty good for the song itself.

Damn...Maiden & Priest !

A little modern sounding but who cares.... sounds great and it is time to not live in the past. I fear with a move "vintage" guitar tone , the Slate drums would stick out way too much and sound too polished. As it is, it works. Did you replace a drummer on an E kit for the sounds? or is that midi.

I agree in the tones. I'll still keep playing around though.

I made all the beats/fills myself. My buddy/band member Ralph will be tracking in his Roland TD10 Kit. He's a killer drummer.

I need to find a solution for the space my acoustic kit is taking up.. problem is, I hate the sound of V drum snares. No matter how you splice it, they suck and sound like a video game on rolls.. so uniform... kakakakakakakaka everything seemingly the same attack and duration. I have been thinking about just getting a small kit though and micing a real snare instead of the V snare. Wonder how that would play out.

Let me know when those Quickrod profiles are done :)

Me and you are essentially doing the same project right now :) I'm doing a bunch of 70s/80s cover songs for an album. I'm tracking all the guitars with the Kemper, and all the bass via a GAP Pre-73 DI/Pre. The drums will be me playing my Roland TD-11 kit using Steven Slate drums. The Kemper just sits in the mix sooooo nicely, especially with an all digital mix.

Oh I think ALL the Roland Drums sound like shit. These are Steven Slate 4 Platinum sounds. The midi alone will be captured and Slates will be used for the mixes. Probably this same kit here which is the Slate Metal 05 kit. The Slate mappings are designed around the Roland kits so it's perfect integration.

Nice! Want to "cross pollenate"? I'll definitely get you the Quick Rod profiles when done. Are you keeping the Street Rod? I thought you sold off your Kemper?

I'm down for that! Selling the Street Rod. I love it.....it's just not the Kemper. For what I do, can't beat the Kemper. It's inspiration in a box, not to mention all I do is record these days. I play the Kemper through a pair of dynaudio bm5a monitors, and the sound is fantastic!

I had the M-Audio BX5's but have recently upgraded to the BX8 Carbons. The Kemper sounds amazeballs through them! My Quick Rod hasn't been hooked up in months. It is actually in my downstairs closet. I won't sell it but the Kemper just fills all my needs right now be it in the recording room or live. I am looking forward to profiling it though and opening it the f*ck up!

I had the bx5 as well, best monitors under $1,000 for the Kemper. The dynaudio are on a whole other level.

It's amazing what good studio monitors do for your recording! Who'd have thunk it!
