Hey guys, I know this is a guitar forum. I play guitar 50% of the time. The other 50% I play drums. Some of you guys know me.

Anyway, I just posted the first in my new series of drum videos. This is a high-quality cover of Kings of Leon, Sex on Fire. Fully mic'd kit, mixed in Logic Pro 8, 3 GoPro HD camera angles. I decided to play this one as close to the original as possible.

Awesome idea, and great playing man!! But please, for the sake of every recording and live engineer on earth, RELAX!! There is absolutely no reason to hit that hard. Sure, there's a lot of emotion in that song, but you're destroying the tone & dynamics of everything you hit, which is very obvious in what I just heard from your video. I'm not saying to play like a little girl, but if you just ease up a teeny bit, your kit & cymbals will sound a hell of a lot better.

I agree with you... For studio playing. But, I've tried to go that route before. Too boring for live playing. People want to see a show. That's why many popular live drummers hit like that.

Anytime I went for the subtle approach in a rock band I got shat out by the band members. They want a show too. Nobody want's to see a boring drummer

I respectfully disagree me and my producer were talking about this the other day, There is not better sound in the studio then having a good strong consistent hit.

My drum teachers all hit with authority.

I get much better results from the crowd when I wail away and play really physically. Like I said before... People want to see a show. Michael Jordan didn't have to dunk in order to score a basket. Yet, he did. And that made him famous.

Ha i meant there it NO better sound in the studio than a consistent strong hit, Some of the best snare triggers ive ever hear are where it sounds like some ones standing over a snare and hittinh with both hands, It just sounds huge, Its why my producer loves my drummer so much, Also the reason all of us have to change are tubes so much since all of are amps are cranked to keep up with him

I saw a recording of the drummer of Daath trying out for Slayer. He used the entire range of his arms for every hit. That was a little too much

It`s a cool song. I`ve been tinkering with it for my acoustic set.

Sure, but Michael was a master of the game long before he started putting on a show. You're putting on the show long before being the master. Big difference. No offense to you at all, but if you're going to start offering up free internet drum lessons, I suggest you not take such offense to guys that critique what you're teaching. I watched a couple of your other videos, and you're obviously talented, at rock drumming. Your latin/african video is good, but you sound like a rock drummer trying to play latin. Why? Lack of dynamics. You would much better serve your viewers if you respected the fact that the style of rock drumming is a tiny percentage of the many styles of drumming. And with just about every other style of drumming, hitting at 100% all the time is considered extremely amateur.

I will admit, I'm a little biased, because I've toured with some of the greatest drummers on earth, Kenny Aronoff being one of my favorites. It's well known that A level drummers like him don't hit 100% on every hit because dynamically there's no where else to go, and you kill the tone of what you're hitting. You're much better off staying at 75%.

@ sebby: The reason most engineers and producers ask for the same consistant hit all the time is because if you're band is not an A level artist, he's most likely not making enough money to keep changing gain, compression, and mix levels for the drummer alone. Do you know what it was like to record guys like Ringo or Buddy Rich?? A nightmare.

My favorite drummers to play with have always been the ones that hit hard and made the floor look like some one was using a wood chipper

Great job! You don't have to "tickle" the kit to be considered good drummer. Dave Grohl hits hard as anyone, not to mention Keith Moon, John Bonham. It's rock and roll! I've also jammed with some top-notch drummers and there's room for all kinds of attack on the kit.

Anyway, I'm latin by the way.... Puerto Rican. Can I play good latin music with a good latin feel? No! Dunno why either! Haha.

I used to aim to be a master. Not so much anymore. I've got a bunch more things to worry about now. Will I ever become a master? Probably not. I don't have 8 hours a day to practice drumming (or guitar) anymore. So... I'm just riding now. Let's see how it goes.
