Current GH50L owner here. I think it’s the happiest I’ve been with an amp, and that includes SLOs, JCM 800s, Splawn.

Just a great sounding and operating rock amp.

ive got a new love for my gh100s since i tried both my sd1 and fat sugar with it, both those really make the thing shine.

My 1st real tube amp was a GH100L. Liked it so much I bought a 2nd one. Those 2 amps served me well for quite a few years, until I became a bona-fide gear whore. ??

Regardless of how good this amp is or isn't, Paul's tone hasn't been good since he LEFT Laney. He just can't seem to find his tone. Layering pedals over a clean amp or a crunch channel of this or that album just doesn't work for him. I know he see's himself more as a blues guy now but his tone sucks ballZ now. It's flat.

I would say he has never had good tone. Great player though.

Yes for sure, that is debatable. It used to grate on the ears BUT it worked for the style he played. what he has now, doesn't work for anything.

AORs are kind of funny amps. Series 2 I could happily never see again. Series 1 I was able to get a good sound out of, but the EQ setup with all the pull boosts and stuff is such an unnecessary pain in the ass. Its hard (though not impossible) to get a focused sound with use of an external EQ.

The GH series is miles ahead of the AORs in terms of rock to metal tones. If you are in the doom/stoner/sludge realm, the AOR is great. It would be cool to build something like a single channel 900 in an AOR chassis/with those transformers. Dual masters, two different flavours of gain. But I ain't got those skills! :p

Agreed. His Laney tones were his best.

Paul's tone is good...not sure if it is the best ever and most sought-after tone by all, but it works. His chops though! It doesn't matter what era you listen to, it is all jaw-dropping

What is an AOR ?

The best known Laney amp in the 80's. The ones that were behind DeMartini on stage. The ones that were supposed to compete with JCM800's in the market and didn't come close in popularity.

Thank you for the explanation . Why do you think they were never as popular ?

M

The can be good for stoner tones
Or gutted and made into an 800 with mods which is what I did... or you can put a few jumpers on the board and wire them into an 800 which I had also done. Good bones on those things but they were fizzy
