I am trying to near replicate a 1959 les Paul custom, but I don't see a lot of 1959 les Paul customs in white. Did they produce any that year? Also while your reading this, which do you prefer? Black or white?

Ebony. I have three Les Pauls left to get. A burst Standard, a burst JR and an ebony Custom. Then I can call my Les Paul obsession complete. ;)

Idk about for the year, but I don't really have a preference. I do have a black beauty from 89 which I love, but I have always loved a cream custom. Pure white...alpine white isn't really what I dig, however, I do like white after it ages. Then again, I buy mostly used gear anyway, so you can't go by me...lol.

See, this is what I like, but it is hardly white anymore. His aged into cream. As opposed to this, which is still nice

I see a lot more blacks than whites out there, I would go white for this one

This is my Alpine White LPC and it will
go with me to the Grave!
It started out a Brilliant White and as time
has progressed it is turning slowly into a
Cream color. The way I understand it, is the
Nitro Cellulose does something to the paint
on a chemical level, turning the White to a
Cream over the years.

I like Alpine White, in fact I had a great Alpine White double neck. I just seem to prefer cream. I think it has to do with RR. Come to think of it I got my Black Beauty because it reminded me of this (although mine has all 3 covers still on)...

They didn't make a white custom till 73 I believe at earliest. I have a white custom from 84 that looks identical to the cream example in a posted above but I also have a black 68ri. Customs look best in solid colors and I never liked burst fin on a custom. Go with black, it looks cool no matter what but can't go wrong with white either. Customs are definatly the coolest looking lp's in my opinion.

Well, here is the official response from gibson:

"In 1961, white finish was made available when the model changed over to the SG body style but retained the "Les Paul Custom" name until late 1963. Thanks for the email."

I guess I'll have to do some thinking. Thanks everyone for input. I'll post pics of it when completed.

Love the AW, but it will fade. I purchased mine 1996 around there. It's fading to a off white cream color.

What cracks me up are comments like where did you get that color? :D

Favour requested: could someone take a good closeup of the Gibson logo? Is it usual to see a fair bit of filler marks around the logo?

If I could only have one, I'll take my black beauty. However I've got a serious G.A.S attack going right now for a creme one with a Bigsby too.

The first year for the Les Paul Custom as we know it (not the SG shaped model) to be offered in white was '73. It was never offered in creme (aside from the Custom Shop)...all of those creme Customs are simply a yellowed clear coat over top of white. In the 80's, Gibson offered pearl white on Customs...those ones did not typically yellow for some reason.

To the OP...I'd be more concerned over getting one where you like the feel, playability, response, tone, etc and let the winner of that contest dictate the color (both of which are cool).
