Les Paul: Pickguard or No pickguard?

Those things are tough enough without the pickguard to play, why make it worse?

I have a '76 black custom with cream pups. rings and mathcing pickguard. For me the guard works as part of the color scheme.

ADd a metal pickguard, then it will be even more metal than it is now

I've been kicking around the idea of removing the pickup selector switch ring on mine...this pic has nudged me closer to doing so.

I think plain tops look better with and flame/quilts better without. Saying that my Faded has a great top but it also has loadsa scratches etc in it too thanks to no pickguard.
